Week Overview

This week, we are characterizing the 3D printers and creating 3D prints on our own.

Neil’s lecture Notes

  • The printhead need to be at the right distance.
  • Bridging:
    • If the print is anchored at 2 points, then the bridge between the 2 anchors could span quiet a distance.
  • Angle:
    • 3D printer layers can build on itself to create 20 degree and 30 degree arcs.
  • Fumes:
    • ABS filament typically produce harmful fumes.
    • PLA doesn’t.
  • Hangover:
    • The more it hangs over, the worse it gets.
  • Friction joint:
    • Use of abrasives to join joints.
  • Nano printing:
    • Use of 2 photons to print extremely tiny pieces.
  • Extrusions allow a 3D printer to print things larger than the machine itself.
