Final Project

prompt: Provide an image of a man, lying down straight on a yoga mattress, wearing nothing but shorts, with a device that looks that scans the body. The device looks like a half circle that is slightly wider than shoulder length. One tip of the device is placed near the right shoulder and the other tip is placed near the left shoulder

Problem statement

  • Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States.
  • Current estimates are that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
  • People should self-check once a month and have professional check once a year
  • Checking your back or keeping track of small changes along the time can be difficult

Solution

Have a consumer level device that is able to scan your body and take snapshots of your skin and keep a record of those, for later comparison.
The recorded images might be analysed manually by oneself and/or sent to a machine learning service that will flag concerns to be analysed by a dermatologist.

Design ideas

Design 1

A camera moves along a circle to capture photos 360 degrees around the user. The circle itself moves vertically along the axis to capture the photos at different heights

Design 2

The second iteration simplifies the mechanics by having the camera move just up and down along the vertical axis, but having the user stand on a rotating platform.

Design 3

This design is about trying to make the body scanner something that could easily fit in someone’s closet and not take as much space.
In this case, the user lies down in a thin mattress and the camera travels along the half circle. The half circle structure moves along the user’s body, by standing on top of 2 motorized stands (with wheels).
The user stands still while being scanned in the front and then must turn facing downwards in order to scan the back.
This design also allows the device to be place on a table in case you want to scan just one arm, for example.
