1. Principles and practices

This week I am moving to a small space and I was sketching designs of folding furniture that can work in my current space but also in the future when I have a larger space, so I used that idea to come up with this project. Adapting to change in different spaces has opened a space in the market for folding furniture, e.g. desks, shelves, etc.

BUT… Are there any companies/designers working on commercial folding modules?

The answer is yes, but not on the scale we expect and they tend to be too expensive, many of them work mainly making folding houses but not for commercial sector. Generally commercial modules are not foldable or easy to transport.

THAT IS THE REASON FOR MY PROJECT PROPOSAL!

If you are an entrepreneur, you know how important it is to have a presence in social networks but also to participate in events and fairs.

Usually a local fair looks like this:

Selling small products on a table can be a problem, I suffered from theft of some small products during a fair, it was a bad experience and I have not really participated in one anymore.

So, I propose an adaptable commercial module for entrepreneurs.

WHY CHOOSE IT?

  • DO NO WASTE TIME
  • SECURITY
  • AFFORDABLE COSTS
  • ADAPTABILITY
  • EASY TO TRANSPORT AND ASSEMBLE

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The module is turned on with a button and starts to assemble automatically, also if your space is smaller or larger, this module can be enlarged or reduced with another button, finally there are the wheels left so that it can be easily transported.

At rest it looks like a simple box with wheels, but remember, “Not everything is what it seems”.

This reminded me of Transformers (If you haven’t seen the movie, you need to watch at least one short video to see how they transform).

SKETCH

I will use:

  • Motors to be able to move the pieces.
  • Sensors to be able to recognize the commands from the control panel.
  • Laser cutting to make the assembly pieces.
  • 3D printing to make the joining pieces and help the mechanisms.
  • Plates to be able to program the orders that will be sent to the module.
  • Retractable wheels to move the module when necessary.
  • If other tools are needed to build the module, I will add them.

I will use an IR SENSOR and SERVO MOTORS, as well as a switch and two extra buttons to change from form 1 (compact module) to form 2 (expanded module). This may vary according to the tests I will perform, but this is my initial approach.

ADDITIONAL

  • LED SIGN: I would like to add a led sign at the end and that can be easily modified, each person who has this module, could place the name of their store.

  • STORAGE: I would like that the products that the module has, do not suffer damages when it goes from rest mode to unfolded mode, this way we save time packing and unpacking products.

WHAT I LEARNED?

First, use the SPIRAL WORK METHOD, it will help you a lot to finish your projects in the Fab Academy, believe me, it has happened to me that I have wanted to do many things but I did not focus on something, but when I did, I could complete and then move forward improving my ideas.

You have to DEDICATE TIME, this week I worked part time because the person who will replace me in my job is still not 100% qualified and I felt that the time was going away learning and researching but without advancing the things we had been asked to do.

If you are one of those who lose concentration quickly, LOOK FOR A QUIET AND SECLUDED PLACE TO MOVE FORWARD, it gives me stress to have to be listening to noises while I try to concentrate (especially if it is something new), but once concentrated, I reach a mental point of concentration that I call “THE FLOW ZONE”, there is no power on Earth that takes me out of that zone, except eating :’)

Finally, CHOOSE A PROJECT THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO CARRY OUT.. I used to force myself to think “I should do this as an …”, but I didn’t really want to do it. I wanted to do something that is going to be used after it is built and not dusty in a display case, but above all, something that I am passionate about and I am basing it on the things that I like.

I will try to be more concise and dynamic, do more outlines in my documentation. Just wait for my updates every week!
