Task: Computer-Controlled Cutting - Design, lasercut, and document a parametric construction kit, accounting for the lasercutter kerf. Cut something on the vinyl cutter.

Design Process:

Created an elegant sliceform torus using parametric design principles. The design features interlocking crescent-shaped pieces with precisely calculated grooves (3.53mm) that account for material thickness and laser kerf. Used both CorelDRAW for 2D cutting paths and Fusion 360 for parametric modeling.

Tools & Technologies:

Introduction to embedded programming, covering microcontroller programming and embedded system development.

Exploring 3D scanning technologies and various 3D printing techniques for digital fabrication.

Learning electronics design principles and PCB layout techniques for custom circuit boards.

CNC cutting parts for the Smart Beehive — roof and inner cover on the ShopBot Alpha CNC router.

Milling and testing the LED matrix board designed in Week 6 on the Carvera PCB mill.

Probe an input device's analog levels and digital signals using a multimeter and oscilloscope. Measure something by adding a sensor to a microcontroller board.

Measure the power consumption of an output device. Add an output device to a microcontroller board and program it to do something.

Send a message between two projects. Design, build and connect wired or wireless nodes with network or bus addresses and local input/output devices.

Part 1: Design a machine including mechanism, actuation, automation and application. Build mechanical parts and operate manually. Part 2: Actuate and automate the machine. Our group built a 3-axis CNC solder paste dispenser for circuit board fabrication.
