Assignment

Individual Assignment:

  1. Propose a final project masterpiece that integrates the range of units covered, answering: What will it do? Who's done what beforehand? What will you design? What materials and components will be used? Where will come from? How much will they cost? What parts and systems will be made? What processes will be used? What questions need to be answered? How will it be evaluated? Your project should incorporate 2D and 3D design, additive and subtractive fabrication processes, electronics design and production, embedded microcontroller interfacing and programming, system integration and packaging Where possible, you should make rather than buy the parts of your project Projects can be separate or joint, but need to show individual mastery of the skills, and be independently operable .

Final Project Plans

My final project will be to design, fabricate and test a “do not disturb” desk light. We have a very open office which leads to great collaboration and communication but can be distracting and sometimes a major interruption. So my plan is to create a lamp that indicates when I am free to talk or busy in a meeting in an effort to reduce the interruptions and distractions. I did some searching on Google for other similar ideas and there are quite a few similar ideas on the market from simple flags you can put up to expensive flashing beacons that indicate your availability. My design is fairly simple so that it can sit on the corner of my desk and I can simply tap the touch screen to change availability colors. (Red = Do Not Disturb, Yellow = Approach at your own risk, Green = Free to talk). Concept pictures are found on my Final Project page.

Project Materials List

Parts Description Source Price
3D Printed base and top FDM Filament Amazon $25.00
Acrylic side panels Frosted acrylic Mexico $25.00
4-wire resistive touchscreen Adafruit 2.8" TFT LCD Breakout board. 4-wire Adafruit $28.95
LEDs RGBW addressable LED module DigiKey $7.00
Seeed XIAO RP2040 Board Seeed RP2040 - microcontroller board Amazon $25.99 (3 pack)

I have created the base and side panels for the desk lamp as well as the PCB board that that will integrate the RP2040, TFT screen, and LED module. I have purchased the touch screen and the LED module.
