16. Applications and implications

What will it do?

My project is a butterfly shelf that will will light up according to the color of the item placed in the color box.

Who’s done what beforehand?

Mrs.Dhiman has a very similar plan, using the same sensor with plans to use it to change the color of her dress to correspond with the color of what people hugging the individual wearing the dress have on.

What will you design?

I will made the the shelf with wood and fill it in with resin, I will also design the box that will have the color sensor inside of it.

What materials and components will be used?

The final product will include plywood, resin, colored pigment for the resin, 2 Raspberry Pi Pico Ws, neopixles, either laser cut pieces or 3d printed pieces for the color box, and a remote to turn it on and off.

Where will the materials come from?

all of the materials I plan to use are available in my lab, so I will not need to purchase and materials for my project.

How much will the materials cost?

Item Price Quantity Link
RGB NeoPixels $22.99 2 strips Link
FR1 Board $1.00 (per board) 1 board Link
1/2” plywood $24.78 1 Link
Surface mount header pins $4.74 2 packs of 8 Link
Jumper wires $6.96 1 pack Link
Vinyl sticker sheets $11.99 1 pack Link
3D Printer fillament PLA $29.99 1 roll Link

What parts and systems will be made?

I will be connecting the color sensor to a the Pico W, which will also be connected to another Pico W that will control the neopixels.

What processes will be used?

I will CNC with the Shopbot to create the body of the shelf as well as resin work for the colors. Neopixels will be my output for the project while the color sensor will be my input I will also use electronic production to make boards for all of my component. I will have a few 3d printed components that will be used to hide electronics. To make the box where the color sensor will reside, I will used laser cutting snd well as a lot of CAD designing overall. I will also make a vinyl cutting to create stickers that I will use to cover the resin on my shelf while I paint it.

What questions need to be answered?

The main question that much be answered is how to power the amount of neopixels I have. As well as how to best place the color sensor to get the most accurate readings

How will it be evaluated?

My butterfly shelf will be evaluated based off of two factors, the functionality of the final product as well as the amount of fab academy skills incorporated in the production process

Where possible, you should make rather than buy the parts of your project?

I plan to create every component in my project except for the xaio rp2040, the color sensor, and the neopixels.
