15. Molding and casting

Group Page

For this week I crafted a picture frame and a decorational plate that I wanted to replicate in white plaster.

These are the materials I used:

Some sticks, hot glue gun, wood box, tape, cardboard box, silicone rubber, catalyst, white plaster, mixing containers and mixing sticks.

Positive 1

The pieces I crafted and wanted to replicate are the following:

I kept the objects simple to facilitate demolding.

Negative

For the creation of my negative molds, I used the silicone and catalyst recommended by my local supplyer.

I also had to find and divide a wooden box that would hold the silicone mold.

To finish preparing the box, I sealed the edges:

And I fixed the picture frame to the box:

I followed the instructions given by the supplyer and the back of the bottle:

The only difference was that thinner was not available, so I couldn't use it. What I did was measure the silicone I thought was enough and calculated 5% of that for the catalyst.

Then I mixed both components very well.

I distributed a thin layer of vaseline over all the surfaces in the box and positive figures so that it was easier to remove the silicone mold later and it doesn't stick.

With everythin ready, I started pouring the silicone on the box by layers from thinnest to thickest. With each layer a tried to vibrate the box so that the bubbles came to the surface and poped.I also made sure that the layer with more details was thin so that it didn't have bubbles either.

Tehn I poured the silicone by layers on the second side of the box with figure 2 (the VR plate). I repeated the same process as before:

Finally, I fixed the figure with tape so it didn't go back up floating.
