Final Project Presentation and Development

After the presesentation, I wanted to get a better quality video. As Neil suggested, I “cheated” and took the 20 frames of the animation separately, without the device functionning, and put them together as a stop motion animation:

What tasks have been completed, and what tasks remain?

I managed to finish all the assignments. One (make something big week) had to be completed later, since I failed to do it during the allocated week.

The final project has been completed and presented. For this project, I would like to be able to take some better videos of it, so I guess that’s the main thing that remains to do.

What has worked ? What hasn’t?

I was able to obtain an animation, which was already not bad in itself, since many components needed to work together to get to this. The main point of disappointment was the small radius of the disk, which made the animation too crowded. It was therefore hard to distinguish a fluid animation when looking closer to the center.

What questions need to be resolved?

The main issue I would like to solve would be to take a better video of the project working. For this, I think I would need either to synchronize the frame rate of the zoetrope with the framerate of the camera (for example: zoetrope at 10fps and camera at 30fps) or to cheat by taking a video of the zoetrope spinning with the lights on and then animate it in a video editor, as Neil suggested.

What will happen when?

I hope I can find the time next week to tackle this issue with the video. If not, I’ll probably get to it in the second half of July, since I won’t have too much time until then.

What have you learned?

Wow, many things. During Fab Academy in general, I learnt almost every step of the way, since I only had some experience with programming and not much more.

During the making of the final project, I also experienced new issues that I needed to overcome. The most surprising to me what that the capacitors I used during the whole Fabacademy suddenly weren’t enough because I slightly changed the board configuration. This taught me to not always trust the datasheet recommendations and to question things that I held for granted.

Since I was also a bit disappointed by the final rendering of the zoetrope which was a bit small, maybe spending more time planning the animation could have make things a bit better.

Since I used many of the techniques that I learnt during Fabacademy, even if I cannot pin point a skill learnt by using them, everytime I’m using them makes me handle them with a bit more confidence. This, for me, is the key to be comfortable in the Fablab.
