19. Invention, intellectual property and income

What is Intellectual property?

According to the World Intellectual Property Organization, Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind: inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce.

Intellectual property in a simple sense is a creation of the human intelligence or mind. As a form of property right, intellectual property can be considered as assets that can be bought, sold, mortgaged, exchanged, and licensed like physical property. Intellectual property is safeguarded only if rights (regarding its use) are given to the producers of intellectual property. Intellectual property rights are provided by national governments with the aid of statutory provisions to inventors writers etc.

WTO’s TRIPs Agreement classifies intellectual property rights into following groups.

Copyright and related rights Trademarks, including service marks Geographical indications Industrial designs Patents Layout- designs (topographies) of integrated circuits Undisclosed information, including trade secrets Control of Anti-Competitive Practices in Contractual Licenses.

Objective of the week

Assignments:

  • Develop a plan for dissemination of your final project
  • Prepare drafts of your summary slide (presentation.png, 1920x1080) and
  • Video clip (presentation.mp4, 1080p HTML5, < ~minute, < ~10 MB) and put them in your root directory.

The main goal of the week is to develop a plan to disseminate my final project.

Plan for dissemination

Currently I am working as a Bio-Fablab engineer in one of the technical Institute in Bhutan. Learn more about the institute here

Once I graduate Fabacademy my inital plan is present my project to the faculty and students of my institute. Then we will be discussing on how to apply the project in our college mega farm for the real use.

Few more such prototype will be displayed in the campus to encourage the students on digital farming.

After that I will develop a project proposal on reviving the rural economy through digital farming and will execute it in Golden Village model farming project.

I will do a presentation on my project in various seminar organized by different departments in the university to bring such more projects in the campus.

Licensing

The idea behind my project is making something that can help to uplift and revive rural’s economy, create a self-sufficient community around the world. Therefore, I chose to use the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International license.

This license allows other people to create and edit my final project but doesn’t allow anyone to make profit. However I like the fact that I must be given credit by those who may add on or adapt my project.

Project Presentation Development

For the project presentation I have to prepare a summary slide(presentation.png, 1920x1080 format) that will be used along a slide a one minute video (presentation.mp4, 1080p HTML5, < ~minute, < ~10 MB). For that I used a template from Canva.com and video using kdenlive video editor.
