* OBJECTIVE :
Design and produce something with a digital fabrication process (incorporating computer-aided design and manufacturing) not covered in another assignment. Document the requirements that your assignment meets, and include everything necessary to reproduce it. Possibilities include (but are not limited to) composites, textiles, biotechnology, robotics, and cooking.
- Demonstrate workflows used in the chosen process;
- Select and apply suitable materials and processes to create your project.
In this week I tryied 2 different subjects : kirigami and computer institching
1- Kirigami :
I like origami but with my search I decover Kirigami
* What is Kirigami?
KIRIGAMI is the Japanese word for the art of designing paper. The etimology of the word comes from the Japanese "kiru" - cut and "gami" - paper. ... KIRIGAMI is an art of designing and cutting the paper into the desired shape, unlike origami, where the paper can be only folded.
There are several of plat form can help to design kirigami and origami :
To design the pattern with different angles and sizes I Found an Inkscape plugin (from leon-wittwer) that lets you input the desired characteristics and will create the pattern for you. To install it you need to look where your User extensions folder is by going to Edit -> Preferences -> System in Inkscape and copy the miura.inx and miura.py file there. When you restart Inkscape you should find the plugin in the Extensions menu. I have used a laser cutter for cutting, to be more precise and faster. I Use brif card : 180g, A4 (210*297mm)
2- Embroidery Machines :
I was always fascinated by embroidery and knitting and loved it ... Today I was happy that I was able to operate the embroidery machine using CAD. This machine is a combination of my specialty and my grandmother's profession. we don't have embroidery machine in our lab but have go to Tailoring workshop belongs to Benghazi Alamal , benghazi alam is a nonprofit foundation they founded this workshop to support women who are the sole breadwinner for their family. but when I go to Tailoring workshop I found that the machine is useless and they have a problem how to design and genrate dst files, because the machine software works only in old version of windows with old packege of ".net framware" and they didn't have access to software update or framware, here I did my search with fab academy community I found many resources here is one of them In my research I found "Inkstitched Extenation" that really useful and helps me in faster way, this Extension is works with Inkscape software, here is my steps I did:
1- download from this web site .
2- Extract the file.Open the inkscape folder in programfiles and search for the share folder in the inkscape folder or
* In Inkscape, go Edit > Preferences > System, Look for the path of the User Extensions,
* Copy the path name Go to this location on your computer.
* Put all the contents of the downloaded, unzipped folder (downloaded) into the current folder.
3- Restart inkscape, go to Extention in toolbar you will get (ink/stitch).
Design in inkscape :
1- In extention toolbar --> Inkstitch --> embroider.
2- click simulation in the same way : extention toolbar --> Inkstitch --> simulation. then save files as ".dst" files in USB flash memory
3- put USB flash memory in FEIYA embroidery machine (CTF1202) with 2 HEADs, 12 NEEDLEs, HEAD INTERVAL: 400mm ,EMB.SPACE:400x450mm, MACHINE SIZE:1000x950x1600mm, Maximum speed in stitches per minute: 1000rpm.
Final Result:
