Applications and Implications

What will it do?

One of the fields that I am interested in and want to raise awareness about is mental health. From there, my idea for my final project is to create a toy for children that will help them express their emotions in Arabic. The children will have 4 cats that are printed out and that reflect 4 different emotions, which are fear, sadness, happy, and anger. Based on how they feel they will place one of the cats in a box and once it is placed the speaker will say out the emotion in Arabic. My aim is for this toy to teach kids how to express their feelings and communicate with people around them.

Who’s done what beforehand?

Based on the research that I have done, there are many toys that show kids different feelings and teach them what emotions they can experience. Below are two of these examples that show the kids emotions through different characters. What my project is trying to add is for kids to be comfortable expressing themselves in their mother tongue and for them to hear these emotions being said out loud.

What will you design?

Most parts of the project will be designed by me. These parts are the box, the 3d cats, and the PCB board. The only parts that won’t be designed are the Dfplayer, power bank, speaker and the microcontroller.

What materials and components will be used?

Where will it come from?

How much will they cost?

  1. Power bank: 10 JOD

  2. Microcontroller: I ordered it from Germany 4 JOD

  3. LED strip: already had it in TechWorks, 1 JOD.

  4. Sd card: 5 JOD

  5. 340 grams of White PLA filament from colorFabb for the cats. Since the spool, which is 750 grams, is about 13 JOD, and I used half of it, it will cost me about 7 JOD.

  6. Walnut wood for the box: 5 JOD

  7. Dfplayer mini MP3 player module : 3 JOD

According to all the materials I will use, the final prototype will cost me about 35 JOD, which is 50 dollars in total.

What parts and systems will be made?

  1. The box that will contain all the other components.

  2. The 4 cats with different emotions will be 3d printed.

  3. The PCB board.

What processes will be used?

  1. 2D and 3D design

  2. 3D printing

  3. CNC Router

  4. Vinyl cutter

  5. Electronics Design & Production

  6. Input and Output Devices

  7. Programming

What questions need to be answered?

I am unsure whither the cat will be a full 3D model or a flat act with thickness.

How will it be evaluated?

I am looking forward to seeing children trying the toy out, based on how appealing the toy is for kids I will be evaluating my project. Also I am carefully looking into integration and packaging as this is something I will also be using for my evaluation.
