WEEK 16 - wildcard week

INTRODUCTION

Coincidentally this week I had wanted to make something that I had put off for a long time, so I'm glad I'll be doing it on this assignment.

Assignment Description

  • Design and produce something with a digital fabrication process (incorporating computer-aided design and manufacturing) not covered in another assignment, documenting the requirements that your assignment meets

Ideate/faprication

I decided to make a candle mold directly from the 3D printing part

  • I downloaded this Mold(Pavel the Ghost Candle Mold) from thingiverse here
  • and i designed this mold from spiral vase

Making process

  • First I got regular wax sticks.
  • Then I broke it into very small pieces, using sharp tools.
  • And I kept the candle wick
  • Then on a simple electric heater I used a bowl to heat the wax until melting, roughly 4 minutes
  • We can also use the microwave for that
  • I had put on the candle wick and then poured the molten wax
  • Finally

Tips and Tricks

  • Do not allow the wax to heat up more than the melting point.
  • Do not cast the melted wax while it is too hot, wait a while.
  • Also, do not wait for the melted wax to cool to crust, as this will result in many defects in the product.
  • This time I used PLA, I think in the next time, i'll use ABS
  • Unfortunately, until now I have not succeeded in creating a mold with small and subtle details, because the wax is firmly attached to the printed part.
  • and my instructor Khaled advised me this, and recommended the use of epoxy to isolate the wax from the printed part, in the next time
