Week 17

Review

This week’s assignment we’re going to develop a plan of dissemination for our projects. Begin to think about how to promote our projects and how to take them to another level it’s hard at the beginning but it’s definitely something really important to do. The purpose of my final project when I started was always to be able to combine something from my profession (architecture), with all the new knowledge in electronics, programming and fabrication in generally.

Motivation

My primary interests at this time are the responsive architectural systems, the Fab Academy was a great opportunity to explore and land all the ideas that I had at the beginning. With no previous knowledge about electronics and programing, I dreamed high in the first week, but now I have realized that there’s a LOT to learn, but that’s the way I want to go.

After the Academy ends, I would like to stay in the academic field and begin a research in responsive architectural systems supported by my University. Begin to explore the system that goes behind the facade elements, learn from some study cases around the world in order to develop prototypes and knowledge in this increasing field.

Invention

The idea to start with this research is to keep developing this and other prototypes with new materials, new mechanical systems and new sensors before take them into a business. In the last decades there is an increasing concern in sustainability, energy saving and climatic change. As response to all this concerns, the new trends in kinetic architecture and domotic architecture are taking an important role nowadays.

A building envelope must transcend its role as a simple protective wrapper and “understand” all the forces that act in itself (climatic, information, human agents) and response in the best way. Sensors, actuators, “smart materials” allow a new experience where the architecture adapts to humans. It’s all about the experience and how architecture elements like walls, ceilings, floors, divisions, and others can interact with the users in the space.

There is a lot to do before turn all of this into a business but definitely innovation and new technologies are a need for an architecture firm and that’s where we can provide our services and our experience.

Intellectual Property

For my final project, many people always had a good advice and were ready to solve my doubts. The importance of the multidisciplinary took a new whole perspective for me. The network let us work simultaneously in a project from different locations. Sharing our ideas help us to improve and develop them. For my project I’m going to take the MIT license.

Income

As I mentioned before my idea is to continue working with my university (“Universidad Nacional de Colombia Sede Medellín”) there are a few investigation calls where I can obtain budget to continue my research. With a few years of experience will be the moment to start a business but continuing with the idea of innovation.

In other way, there is another look for this entire final prototype. It could be possibilities to work with a construction or architecture company interested in take this prototype to an industrial scale in order to develop projects with technology and innovation. I think that the fab labs are great places to develop and see the ideas materialized, but it is also important to take them to the market, test other materials and systems in the industry.

The idea to take this prototype into an industrial scale made me think on how to improve it to make it appropriate to the consumer needs, to the companies’ interests and a business for me. But... as i said before there is a lot to learn, investigate and prototype.
