Invention, Intellectual Property, and Income

Assignment 14

Invention, intellectual property, and income

This assignment is pretty light compared to other assignments. During the session, I learned new terms that made me aware of what I should do after finishing my final project. Basically, it is about the whole life cycle of invention. How we manage intellectual property and ways of generating income of our project. We will think about what happens when an idea for a product is born and how to patent that idea. We also were asked to develop a plan for dissemination of our final project and prepare a draft of our summary slide with dimensions 1920x1080 and make a short video clip.

Now, let’s describe some terms that I have learned.

What is invention ?

An invention is a unique or novel device, method, composition or process. The invention process is a process within an overall engineering and product development process. It may be an improvement upon a machine or product or a new process for creating an object or a result.

What is intellectual property?

Intellectual Property refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce.

What is an open source license?

An open-source license is a type of license for computer software and other products that allows the source code, blueprint or design to be used, modified and/or shared under defined terms and conditions.

There are various kinds of open source licences such as:

The MIT License

The MIT License is a permissive free software license originating at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

This license lets others remix, adapt, and build upon your work non-commercially, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms.

Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs CC BY-NC-ND :

This license is the most restrictive of our six main licenses, only allowing others to download your works and share them with others as long as they credit you, but they can’t change them in any way or use them commercially.

How to choose the right license ?

The below diagram is a useful place to start !

After reading some types of open source licenses, I decided to make my final project licensed under a creative common license and I chose this type Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike CC BY-NC-SA.

Dissemination and possible Income:

I am going to make a business model canvas for my final project.

What is a business model canvas?

It is a great tool to help us understand a business model in a straightforward, structured way. Business model canvas consists of 9 categories:

  • Customer segments: It is the practice of dividing a customer base into groups of individuals that are similar in specific ways, such as age, gender, interests and spending habits.
  • Value proposition: It is the fundamental concept of the exchange of value between your business and your customer/clients.
  • Revenue streams: Revenue Streams are defined as the way by which your business converts your Value Proposition or solution to the customer’s problem into financial gain.
  • Channels: Channels are defined as the avenues through which your customer comes into contact with your business and becomes part of your sales cycle.
  • Customer relationships: Customer Relationships is defined as how a business interacts with its customers.
  • Key activities: Key Activities of your business/product are the actions that your business undertakes to achieve the value proposition for your customers.
  • Key resources: Key means the resources your business requires to do business.
  • Key partners: Key Partners are a list of other external companies/suppliers/parties you may need to achieve your key activities and deliver value to the customer.
  • Cost structure: Your business cost structure is defined as the monetary cost of operating as a business.

  • Future Probabilities :

In the future, I will improve the project by making different themes and develop a website to allow people to buy the kit and create their own account to share the ideas with others. Also, I will present my project to MOE in Saudi Arabia in order to be manufactured as mass production and distribute them to the LABs at schools. Also, I will improve the project by doing a database of all the ideas and making a network between makers and students to share the ideas and collaborate.

    Project Plan

I am planning to use MS project software to build a proper plan. This plan will help me to finalize all the requirements before the cut off date of FAB Academy. I am going to divide the plan into five phases.

      1. Designing Phase.
      2. Fabrication Phase.
      3. Electronic and programming Phase.
      4. Assembly Phase.
      5. Presentation Phase.

    Draft Slide:

I am going to use illustrator software to design my final slide.

    Draft Video:

I am going to use IMovie software to make my final video.

The video below is the first draft and I am still working on the theme design, music and final product.
