About the assignment: Composites

Design and make a 3D mold (~ft2), and produce a fiber composite part in it.

the mold

For this assignment I followed Neil's suggestion to use my wood structure I created for Computer Controlled Machining assignment as a mold or supporting structure.

I prepared my tools for the work: paper cover for the floor, fiberglass resin (polyester resin), chemical resistant gloves, brushes, mask, proctetive glasses.

composite materials

For my composite materials I useda white 2 way stretchy fabric I bought from Hancock Fabric and polyester resin I bought from Home Depot.

I cut part of the fabric, because I want to try with a small part before to cover the entire structure.

I calculated that with half of gallon I could do 12 / 15 sq ft. so I cut a triangle 5' x 5'.

I started mixing the resin with the hardener

I mixed the resin with the stretchy fabric. After a couple of minutes of mixing and moving every part of the fabric was socked with resin.

The weight of the fabric with the resin made the work easier...

I wanted only to see if the structure is strong enought to support people so I am not going to connect the wood with the fabric.

I also want to see the under structure in wood so I am not going to add other layers.

The composite structure made by wood - 4 way stretchy fabric - epoxy resin is resistent enought to support my weight.

Next step is to cover the entire structure...and mybe paint it, I don't really like the yellow coloration of the resin.
