Roland MDX-40A 3D Milling Station

Quick-Reference Operator Card

1. Pre-Flight Safety & Setup Checklist

  • [ ] APPROVED MATERIALS ONLY: Machinable Wax, High-Density Polyurethane Foam, ABS, Acrylic (PMMA), Delrin (POM), or Hardwoods. PROHIBITED: Metals (Aluminum/Steel) without special flood coolant setup, or unapproved toxic plastics.
  • [ ] INTERLOCK COVER: Keep the front safety cover CLOSED during operations. Never attempt to bypass or defeat safety door switches.
  • [ ] STOCK SECUREMENT: Secure material firmly using mechanical toe clamps or high-tack double-sided tape across the entire base. Loose stock will shatter tooling and ruin the spindle.
  • [ ] NO COMPRESSED AIR: NEVER use compressed air guns to blow chips inside the enclosure. Compressed air forces fine dust past seals into linear bearings and lead screw nut threads. Always vacuum.

2. Standard 5-Step 3D Milling Workflow

  1. CAM TOOLPATH SETUP (SRP Player)
  2. Roughing Pass (1/8” \ \text{Flat Endmill}): Set step-down to 1.5\text{ mm} (Wax) or 0.8\text{ mm} (Plastics).
  3. Finishing Pass (1/16” \ \text{Ball Endmill}): Set stepover to 10-15\% of tool diameter (0.15\text{ mm}) for mirror finish.
  4. MOUNT STOCK & SET X/Y ORIGIN Clamp or tape raw block securely to the bed plate. In VPanel, jog carriage to the lower-left corner of the stock top surface. Click Set Origin: X/Y.
  5. AUTOMATIC Z-ZEROING (Z-Sensor Touch-Off) Place the metallic Z-sensor puck on top of the stock directly under the endmill. Connect the sensor clip to the spindle housing or tool shaft. In VPanel, click Z-Sensor \rightarrow Start. Wait for the bit to auto-touch and set Z=0. Remove sensor before starting!
  6. EXECUTE CUT JOB Close the transparent door, load the .prn / .rml file into VPanel, verify spindle RPM (4,500 - 15,000\text{ RPM}), and click Output / Cut.
  7. VACUUM & POST-PROCESSING After spindle stops completely, vacuum all wax chips or plastic dust. Unclamp workpiece and inspect surface finish.

3. Material Speeds, Feeds & Tooling Matrix

Substrate & Operation Tool Geometry Spindle Speed Feed Rate (mm/min) Plunge / Stepover Key Operational Rule
Machinable Wax (Rough) 1/8” \ (3.175\text{ mm}) Flat 7,000\text{ RPM} 1,500\text{ mm/min} Step-down: 1.5\text{ mm} Fast material removal; clean chips easily recyclable.
Machinable Wax (Finish) 1/16” \ (1.58\text{ mm}) Ball 10,000\text{ RPM} 1,000\text{ mm/min} Stepover: 0.15\text{ mm} Mirror finish (Ra \< 0.8\mu\text{m}); ideal for silicone molding.
HD Polyurethane Foam 1/4” \ (6.35\text{ mm}) Flat 12,000\text{ RPM} 2,400\text{ mm/min} Step-down: 3.0\text{ mm} Ultra-fast roughing; wear N95 mask during cleanup.
ABS / Delrin Plastic 1/8” \ (3.175\text{ mm}) Flat 10,000\text{ RPM} 800\text{ mm/min} Step-down: 0.8\text{ mm} Low feeds prevent friction heat and plastic melting.
Acrylic (PMMA) 1/8” \ (3.175\text{ mm}) Ball 12,000\text{ RPM} 600\text{ mm/min} Stepover: 0.10\text{ mm} Translucent optical finish; use single or 2-flute tools.

4. Rapid Troubleshooting & Recovery

Issue / Error Root Cause Immediate Corrective Action
Plastic Melting / Tool Clogging Feed rate too slow or spindle RPM too high. Increase feed rate or decrease spindle RPM; pause job and clear melted plastic from flutes.
Rough / Scalloped Surface Finish Finishing stepover distance set too wide. Reduce stepover parameter in SRP Player to 10\% of ball-nose tool diameter (\sim 0.15\text{ mm}).
Z-Sensor Touch-Off Error Sensor clip disconnected or dirty contact face. Clean brass contact face with 99\% IPA and verify alligator clip is firmly grounded to spindle/bit.
