Epilog Legend 36EXT Laser Cutter

Quick-Reference Operator Card

1. Pre-Flight Safety & Station Setup Checklist

  • [ ] PERSONAL SAFETY & ATTENDANCE: NEVER leave the laser unattended while firing. Keep a \text{CO}_2 or Halotron fire extinguisher nearby.
  • [ ] EXHAUST & AIR ASSIST: Turn on the main exhaust blower (verify gauge reads \ge 4.0”\text{ H}_2\text{O}) and air assist compressor. Do not fire without active airflow.
  • [ ] MATERIAL CHECK: Confirm substrate is on the APPROVED list (Acrylic, Wood, Delrin, Cardboard, Anodized Aluminum). STRICTLY PROHIBITED: PVC, Vinyl, ABS, Polycarbonate/Lexan, or Leather with Chromium.
  • [ ] CRUMB TRAY & BED: Clear scrap material from the honeycomb vector bed and crumb tray to prevent flare-up fires.

2. Standard 5-Step Cutting & Engraving Workflow

  1. PREPARE VECTOR FILE Set vector cut lines to Hairline (0.001” / 0.025\text{ mm}) with RGB colors (Red = Vector Cut, Black = Raster Engrave).
  2. LOAD MATERIAL & AUTO-FOCUS Place stock flush against top-left origin (0,0). Attach plunger focus gauge to carriage (or press Focus on keypad), select Focus \rightarrow GO to auto-set 2.0” bed height.
  3. CONFIG DRIVER PARAMETERS Open Print menu \rightarrow Epilog Engraver Driver. Set Job Type (Combined / Vector / Raster), Speed, Power, and Frequency (Hz) per material matrix.
  4. EXECUTE JOB Close acrylic lid, select job number on keypad screen, and press GO. Monitor the cut path through the window continuously.
  5. POST-JOB EVACUATION Wait 30 seconds after laser completes before opening lid to allow exhaust fan to clear residual toxic fumes.

3. Material Speed, Power & Frequency Matrix (75\text{W} Baseline)

Substrate Material Job Mode Speed (%) Power (%) Frequency / DPI Key Operational Rule
1/8” \ (3\text{ mm}) Acrylic (Cast) Vector 20\% 80\% 5000\text{ Hz} High Hz yields clean, flame-polished edges. Air assist ON.
1/4” \ (6\text{ mm}) Acrylic (Cast) Vector 8\% 100\% 5000\text{ Hz} Slow pass; ensure exhaust vacuum holds sheet flat.
1/8” \ (3\text{ mm}) Baltic Birch Vector 30\% 65\% 500\text{ Hz} Low Hz reduces edge charring and burning.
1/4” \ (6\text{ mm}) Baltic Birch Vector 12\% 90\% 500\text{ Hz} Moderate kerf (~0.15\text{ mm}); watch for knots in inner plies.
Anodized Aluminum Raster 80\% 40\% 600\text{ DPI} Ablates anodized dye; produces high-contrast white vector text/graphics.
Delrin (POM) Vector 25\% 70\% 1500\text{ Hz} Crisp precision parts; highly flammable—watch closely.

4. Rapid Troubleshooting & Safety Interventions

Emergency / Issue Root Cause Immediate Corrective Action
Sustained Flame (>2s) Excessive power or lack of air assist. Press STOP or open lid immediately to disengage safety interlocks. Use \text{CO}_2 extinguisher if flame persists.
Material Not Cutting Through Lens smudged, low power, or bad focus. Re-check 2.0” auto-focus; inspect ZnSe lens/mirror for smoke residue and wipe with PEC-PAD + 99\% IPA.
Laser Firing Without Cut Effect Banned metal or incorrect hairline width. Confirm stroke width is \le 0.001”; bare un-anodized metals reflect \text{CO}_2 beam and cannot be cut.

⚠️ TOXIC FUME & FIRE HAZARD: PVC and Vinyl release lethal Hydrogen Chloride (\text{HCl}) gas that melts lung tissue and permanently corrodes machine optics. Never cut unverified plastics. Always stay at the machine while running jobs. Report lens damage, exhaust failures, or fire incidents to lab staff immediately.
