Week 3 - Computer controlled cutting

For this assignment I didn't have any idea what had I do, but thanks to idea the others students and Jose de los Rios, at the end I found an idea, this was the baby boy desk (bbd) . I began to sketch the "bbd" in solidworks, the extrusion was easy but the assembly was not easy, and it take several hours, but finally I got the assembly, like I show below. You cand download de archives here.
At the beginning the trouble was take the rigth design of pressfit, one of them was the tolerance to fit, I made with various dimensions to adecuate press-fit.
I learned how to use the laser cutter machine, but it was easy because the software was known since the last week, it was the rhinoceros, therefor I had to setting some parameters in the machine like the velocity of cutter, the power and the frequency. It's a pitty that rhinoceros can not install in linux, because I began to work in this Operating System. I got the right parameters after some test cutting differents materials, but at the end I got them. Velocity: 30% , power 62% and frequency: 500Hz, this parameters was to cut the cardboard.
I had to make a video to don't forget it, you can see this video below.
For the design I used the solidworks software, for this assignment draw the sketch was not easy because this software is for 3D design but not for 2D, but the assembly is shown below.
I tried to make the "press-fit" with the software 123D-make from autodesk, it seemed easy because i drew an aircraft and saved it in STL format, I thought the assembly would be successfull but it was no so, like I show below. but finally I think this software is usefull when you have many material and you want to use a gum, I think that is better desing your own press-fit.
I worked in the camm-vinyl too, this was great because I could see the program source, it is programmed in phyton, the fab modules is amazing, thanks for the "knowhow" and the free access to this kind of software. I am trying to know how the software send the machine code to job in x and y coordinates, in the case of camm, one is rotate coordinates and another is x coordinates,I know this it is great for me. At the beginning I did not get the cutting because the machine had troubles with the position of paper, I had to read the manual to insert the paper the right way. Roland Gx-24 Manual
I learned the following:
- How make the adecuate design to draw a press-fit with right dimensions.
- The fabmodule is a great software, because this can process a image to find the lines and coordinates in two dimensions and then send the order to the machine for a adecuate cut.
- I learned to use the fabmodule, this software is programmed with python.
