About me

My background

Hi! I am Avery Horvath. I am a Charlotte Latin alum from the class of 2015. After studying physics at the University of North Carolina (go heels!), I worked as a software engineer for a small startup in Pittsburgh called KEF Robotics, which seeks to create autonomous drones. After 2.5 years in Pittsburgh, I decided it was time to quit my job, move back to Charlotte, and discover new passions - so here I am!

Previous work

During my time at KEF Robotics, I worked as the Machine Learning Tech Lead. I was able to work on cool projects such as human detection, building detection, one-shot recognition, and even compete in an autonomous drone racing competition! My biggest project was related to one-shot building recognition - given an image of a building, command a drone to go find that building. This consisted of designing and training a building detection algorithm and a building recognition algorithm (similar process as facial recogniton). The majority of my previous work is in python, though I am very familiar with git and the command prompt as well.

Other Interests

  • I come from a very musical family where it’s weird if you don’t play an instrument. I started piano in 3rd grade, guitar in 6th grade, and have picked up various instruments over the years. I also just got a drumset in December!
  • I love any and all sports. I still play in an adult soccer league and hope to join a basketball league soon too! I try to golf every week and then I just signed up for a membership to Inner Peaks for rock climbing.
  • Love HALO, fifa, Call of Duty, and many other video games too!
