6. 3D Scanning and printing

This week was an interesting week. Moreover, I gained some knownledge “Making a product by using 3D printer and scanner “.

Initially, I began my day in learning the opration of the 3D printers.

I was give the PLA wire to make 3D models. For this material, We should keep the extrution head at 200 degree celsius and the bed temperture should be 60 dregee celsius for obtaining perfect 3D modal.

So the Operation was started from :-

  • Preheating
  • Extrusion
  • Print

These are the important steps which, should be done in a process.

With that, I learned how to control the controller while & after printing.

Very Most important step cleaning the stocking area, and arresting the stocking before printing.

with this, I also did some trial prints to understand about the machine in a better way.

Trial No : 1 (Video)

Trial No : 2 (Video)

Then, I felt. Operating a 3D printer is just like operating a inkject printer in a home. After learning the machine operations.

I started to download, the Ultimaker Cura software. This software helps in simulation of 3D printer. Downloaded the cura 3D Software from the browser.

Then, I downloaded the .stl files from the fab academy 2020 “3D printers and scanner weeks” For the Design test.

Then, I searched some specifications about my 3D printer, like bed-size, and more for operation cura.

I started to convert .stl file into G-code by cura file.

Steps to convert .stl files to G-codes

  • Open your .stl file in cura.

  • Then check the the settings like matrials, Supports, infill, thickness, brim/raft, and many more.

  • then, click Slicing

  • then cura would convert .stl into g-code, moreover, it also estimates weight, length of PLA uswd to make this model with preview option.

Here is the picture of the explaination.

Generate the G-code, Copy in a USB and it starts to read in the 3D printer.

Pre-work

Before starting the 3D print. I followed these steps to obtain prefect end-result.

Dimension Test

This test indicates, whether the 3D printer can print the 3D objects, with proper measurements, and shape which is feed to the 3D printer.

This is the simulation, in the ultimaker cure software

This is the outcome of the Design…

Desgin test - Dimension

Bridging

This test indicates, the level at which the 3D printer can make bridge the from one end to other, without any hanging filaments…

This is the simulation, in the ultimaker cure software

This is the outcome of the 3D printer.

Desgin test - Bridging

Anisotropy

This test indicates, whether the 3D printer is capable to printer an object with different internal structures(Anisotropy means different structures in an object).

This is the simulation, in the ultimaker cure software.

This is the outcome of the 3D printer.

Desgin test - Anisotropy

Angles

This test indicates, whether the 3D printer is capable to printer an object with different angles without any support.

This is the simulation, in the ultimaker cure software.

This is the outcome of the 3D printer.

Desgin test - Angles

Clearance

This test indicates, whether the 3D printer is capable to printer an object with different size of clearance. So the 3D printed object moves.

This is the simulation, in the ultimaker cure software.

This is the outcome of the 3D printer.

Desgin test - Clearance

Video of Clearances

Infill

This test indicates, whether the 3D printer is capable to printer an object with Letters or shape from the bed and from a certain hight

This is the simulation, in the ultimaker cure software. (This contain Free and infill both)

This is the outcome of the 3D printer.

Design test - Infill

Over-hang Outcome

This test indicates, whether the 3D printer is capable to printer an object above its height.

This is the simulation, in the ultimaker cure software.

This is the outcome of the 3D printer.

Design test - Overhang

Finish Outcome

This test indicates, whether the 3D printer is capable to printer an object, which has a smooth surface.

This is the simulation, in the ultimaker cure software.

This is the outcome of the 3D printer.

Design test - Finish

Thickness Outcome

This test indicates, whether the 3D printer is capable to printer an object with different thickness to figure out the minimal thickness to print.

This is the simulation, in the ultimaker cure software.

This is the outcome of the 3D printer.

Design test - Thickness

The blunder which, I made was resulted in this distorted design.

So from this video, You could see that, I did put the “paper clips” to make the stock surface rigid.

Free Outcome (Repeated due to the blunder)

This test indicates, whether the 3D printer is capable to printer an object which can hang from the height of the object.

This is the simulation, in the ultimaker cure software. (This contain Free and infill both)

This is the outcome of the 3D printer.

Design test - Free

Difference between Over-hanging And Free

With that I have learned about free-hanging and over-hanging.

Then, I also printed the 3D Benchy, which is also a design test and it consist all the design test, which were mentioned above.

3D Benchy

Steps to download 3D Benchy .stl file.

Follow as per the Picture

Step - 1

Step - 2

then, converting .stl into gcode by cura.

This is the preview video.

3D Benchy outcome.

Design Test - 3D benchy

then, I was designing the gyroscope.

With that this day was completed.

In mean while, I was designing my individual assignment of this week. Which is Gyroscope.

Here is the image of Gyroscope

I completed this weeks individual assignment but there are some challenges while converting into moving objects. Also, I was experimenting the 3D scanner Sense.

Here is the photo of the design

While converting the design into combined .stl file, I found hard.

Then, I searched in google and youtube to solve this. Later, I found a method to solve this.

To obtain a combine .stl file in solidworks, this is the method you should follow to obtain the combined .stl

Step - 1

Step - 2

Step - 3

Step - 4

Step - 5

Then, here is the preview of the design, and I converted .stl to .Gcode.

Again, a blunder.

Forgot to clip the stocking base.

The outcome of that.

The Gyroscope outcome.

The while removing the supports

Final View.

But, due to the improper clearence this modal failed to rotate. Hence , I need to make one more gyroscope, which rotate just like a gyroscope.

I compared the design test with my gyroscope. While comparing, I saw the clearance design test and assumed that, I should give some clearence for the linkages to rotate freely.

Then, I Redesigned my Gyroscope.

I convert the .stl file to .gcode in cura for my gyroscope.

So, This was the perview of the final gyroscope.

This is the Gyroscope outcome

While print my final Gyroscope. I faced a failure.

This was the broken Gyroscope photo.

Then, I realised the design method of anisotropy, here due to different gain structure the stength of the matrial varies at different place. Moreover, I thought due that reason my design was failed.

While, removing the supports of the failed gyroscope, I faced many difficulties in removing that. due the too manysuport also, I failed to do my gyro.

the key mistake, which reasulted me in failure was printing in 3 axis. This caused my gyroscope uneven strenghting to the sturture.

To retify this mistakes. I printed same design in a single axis.

This is the preview of the Final Gyroscope

Video at the printing Stage.

The outcome was very prefect, as I thought.

While removing the supports.

Here is the Different in gain pattern and structure.

Then this is the report, which I made while 3D printing.

Noted down the time to print all different kinds of object with that, I could analysis the time at which the machine can complete it’s work.

So, This are my weeks work.

Here is the video.

3D Scaning

Then, Experimenting the 3D scanner. “Sense”

To know about “sense” and it’s operation I checked their website. This was the result. Later, I checked in youtube.

This videos helped me to understand the opration of Sense.

Then, I took the “xbox game cons” as my 3D Object.

I tried to scan it but, I failed many time. Then I got to know about their should a distance. later, I created a radius for the specific object.

Documentation of 3D scanning “Uncut video”

Afterwards, I scanned the object morethan 4 times then, I was confussed wherthere the scanner is working properly. Later, after the 5th scan, I noticed a next button in the bottom right corner. After clicking that I was able to be my scanned image.

then, I downloaded the image in .stl formate and coverted into .gcode by using cura.

Here is the preview of the scanned object.

So this is the picture of the Objects.

Here is the preview of the scanned object.

So, that’s it for the week.

As I mentioned about the video in youtube.
