8. Computer controlled machining

This week there are both individual& group assignments.

Group assignement

  • Do your safety training test runout, alignment, fixturing, speed, feeds, materials and toolpaths for your machine. Individual assignment
  • Make something big
  • Extra credit: do not use fasterners or glue
  • Extra credit: include curved surfaces

Group assignment

In our fablab rwanda we are four students. we did the safety training runout on Shopbot CNC machine that is available in the lab with the help of our local instructor. The CNC we have in our fablab has the following specifications: - Model: ShopBot 888-680-4466 - software : Vcarve - Workspace : 1250x2450 mm

Individual assignment

make something big. For this assignment, I have made a Tv stand. I started by drawing it using SolidWorks Software. The design has the following parts:

  • The upper part (top)

  • The right and left sides

  • The middle part

  • The lower part (bottom)

The top and bottom parts are of the same design

The following is the middle part

Here is the left and right sides that fit in both top and bottom parts

After making the parts I assembled them and this is how my Tv stand design look like.

After making the designs in SolidWorks I saved them as DXF files. And then after, I imported the DXF files in V carve software which is used to generate gcodes used by the CNC machine.

And then, some parameters such as the thickness of the material, spindle speed ,End mill diameter were set.

The CNC machine started milling the parts then after I assembled the milled parts to make my Tv stand as you can see in the following screenshots.
