09 Computer-Controlled Machining

Make sth BIG.

ShopBot - CNC milling machine.

The ShopBot in Providence is able to cut sheets of 4' x 8' plywood. I manage to put into this dimension a desk and a chair for my new apartment. I design furniture in 2d using Rhino.

Cutting profiles on a CNC machine using 3/4 plywood and a living hinge technique to bend the wood.

Lining hinge technique is really amazing. By cutting lines pattern you are able to completely change parameters of a material and bend for example a sheet of wood.

First I test how deep should go cuts called hinges into the wood. I used pocket cuts to engrave lines. This was a first job which I sent to ShopBot. Later on I used profile cuts to cut through the material.

Pocket cuts for hinge technique.

I used the same width for cuts and breaks in between.

I use a press-fit joints technique to assembly the chair.

The chair is perfect for people who move a lot like me and Matt. We can quickly assembly furniture and take it apart any time. The seat is able to come back to its initial shape -after disassembling the sheet becomes flat again.
