1. Principles and practices

This week I worked on defining my final project idea.

The problem

The colonial courtyards of Arequipa (the city where I live) have been considered a World Cultural Heritage site, however, the strong sun exposure makes them unattractive for daytime activities which are usually moved to the evening.

The inspiration

The Texao, the representative flower of Arequipa and in danger of extinction, and its closing and opening movements caused by the change of temperature is the inspiration to generate a beautiful and dynamic proposal.

The proposal

The proposal is to create a cover for the colonial courtyards that provides shade to allow daytime activities, but that also becomes a sculpture in movement by the opening and closing of each of the flowers that make it up. On the other hand, at night the flowers will be illuminated to create a more welcoming and dynamic atmosphere. The flowers will be manufactured with 3D printing, but laser cutting will also be tested. The closing and opening movement will be executed with motors programmed with light and temperature sensors. The led lights will also be programmed to turn on and off together with the movement of the flowers.
