09 - Computer-Controlled Machining

make something big

For this week we have had the chance to work with a Shopbot (a large CNC router that uses a bit -like the Modela- to cut files), and again I feel so lucky.

The design capacity is enormous but I preferred to work in stages, starting from a simple thing, in order to complete my assignment and do not waste material because of my inexperience.

My idea was to create a Vintage wood sign of Ac Cobra,  my favorite american car; So I drew my design in Inkscape (24x18 inc) and then I saved it in PDF, ready for Shopbot.

Unfortunately, even though I tried to simplify the design to facilitate the work to the Shopbot, some parts are unfinished.

At this point with a little patience I drew by hand the guidelines of the missing parts and I have milled them with the handmill. It 'been a great deal of accuracy, but I am satisfied with the final result, mainly because it is the first time in my life that I do something like that.

Poplar wood is used for this delivery is very nice, but in my opinion is necessary to add a little color to enhance the charm of this sign.

Updates will follow soon..
