Week 07 — Computer-Controlled Machining¶
Assignment
This week focused on computer-controlled machining using large-scale CNC equipment.
The goal was to understand the full workflow of machining a large object, from design and material preparation to toolpath generation, machining, and assembly.
Group Assignment — Safety Training
Before starting any machining process, we completed a full safety review of the CNC workflow.
This step is critical to prevent injuries, protect the machine, and ensure reliable operation.
1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)¶
During CNC machining, it is mandatory to use basic protective equipment:
- Safety glasses — to protect eyes from chips and dust
- Hearing protection (headsets) — to reduce noise exposure
These are required at all times while the machine is running.
2. Tool Installation¶
Correct tool installation is essential for both safety and machining accuracy.
Before tightening the tool in the spindle:
- The tool is inserted carefully into the collet
- The thread is first rotated slowly by hand
- This ensures proper alignment and avoids damaging the thread
- After confirming correct positioning, the tool is securely tightened
Incorrect installation can cause:
- tool wobbling
- poor cutting quality
- potential tool breakage
3. Safety Distance and Emergency Controls¶
While the CNC machine is operating, maintaining a safe distance is critical.
- The operator must stay outside the immediate machining area
- Hands must never be near moving parts during operation
- The working area should remain clear of unnecessary objects
We also identified all emergency stop controls:
- Main emergency stop button on the machine
- Control panel stop functions
- Power shutoff location
Knowing these locations allows immediate reaction in case of:
- tool breakage
- material displacement
- unexpected machine behavior
Conclusion
Following these safety procedures ensures a controlled and secure working environment.
Proper preparation significantly reduces risks and helps achieve stable machining results.
