13. Applications and Implications¶
On this week, I will propose fixed idea of my final project.

What will it do?¶
The Japanese railway industry is planning to introduce robotic devices to their work fields to achieve safer and more stable operations due to the aging society in Japan. In R&D center in JR East, I am working to achieve such future railway industry as one of the researchers in JRE. As below figure shows, mobile robots are one of the necessary technologies that we would like to introduce. Moreover, one of my research topics is also related to mobile robots. However, unfortunately, there has been NO robot for research activities there. Then we have been struggling with working our researches. Then, I decided to create my own mobile robot for my research working. I would like to use it as a platform for Proof of Concept of my research.
Who’s done what beforehand?¶
Creating mobile robots is familiar with almost engineers and researchers in the world. However, in the case of JREast, no one has created robots for their researches.
What will you design?¶
The main concept of my final project is shown below figure.
I will design a basic mobile robot with omnidirectional wheels. However, because I would not like to create toy size (similar to a small LEGO robot), so I will design a somehow big robot that can be applied to real experiment fields.
What materials and components will be used?¶
- Components for electrical work
- Geared DC motors X4
- HC-SR04 X4
- HC05 X1
- Battery DC 5V X1
Adapter DC12V X1
Components for mechanical work
- Acrylic plate (thickness=5mm and 3mm)
- Omniwheel X4
Where will come from?¶
How much will they cost?¶
The cost wull be approximately $400 USD. This is because DC motors and omniwheels are expensive.
What parts and systems will be made?¶
I will make
1. Whole body of the robot (plates and atachements for motors and sensors)
2. Electrical system to control DC motors, HC05, and HC-SR04
3. Control algorithm for the robot
What processes will be used?¶
- Mechanical work
- 3D printing
- Laser cutting
- Electrical work
- Milling PCB boards
- Programming in Arduino IDE
What questions need to be answered?¶
Why will I make four boards for each of HC-Sr04?
How will it be evaluated?¶
My final project will be completed if when the robot will be able to move based on the commands from the smartphone application.
