16 - Final Project Planning

PLANNING OF THE FINAL PROJECT

I am sticking with my original idea of a felted piece of wall art that will be backlit with LEDs that will move when music is played.

I started by making some pieces of felt using Norwegian wool roving and some cotton gauze cloth. I was thinking of laser-cutting the felt, but am not so sure that I will do that. Here are some examples of the felt that I made:

The questions to answer for this week's assignment are:

What will it do?

  • Input is sound, output is moving LEDs. It will look pretty

Who's done what beforehand?

What materials and components will be required?

  • Picture frame, felt artwork, LEDs, arduino, microphone, power source

Where will they come from?

  • Picture frame with matting: bought for speed, might fabricate
  • Felt artwork: fabricated
  • LEDs: puchase and solder to designed and fabricated board
  • Arduino: fabricated
  • Microphone board: fabricated
  • Power source: battery or mains

How much will it cost?

  • Picture frame with matting: $5
  • Felt artwork: no additional cost
  • LEDs: will purchase 50 white for ~$14
  • Arduino: no additional cost
  • Microphone board: no additional cost
  • Power source: TBD

What parts and systems will be made?

  • The picture matting will have a design engraved using the laser-cutter
  • The felt will be hand-made
  • The LED array board will be designed and fabricated
  • The Arduino was fabricated during the class
  • The microphone board was fabricated during the class

What processes will be used?

  • 2D CAD
  • Laser-cuting
  • Board Designing & Milling
  • Soldering
  • Programming Input & Output devices

What tasks need to be completed?

  • Design, mill and stuff the LED array board
  • Program the Arduino to take input from the microphone and control LEDs based on the sound
  • Determine power source
  • Test, test, and test
  • Mount electronics behind felt art
  • Make sure the boards are not running hot!!!!

What questions need to be answered?

  • How to design the LED array?
  • How to program the boards?

What is the schedule?

  • By 15 May 2013: make felt, get frame
  • By 22 May 2013: have board designed, milled and stuffed. Program framework.
  • By 29 May 2013: Working project!

How will it be evaluated?

  • By how awesome it is?
