Group Assignment task:Measure the power consumption of an output device
As group, we controlled a servo motor as chosen output device with ESP32 microcontroller.
Image: Complete circuit to control the servo motor with ESP32 microcontroller
How to determine the power consumption of output device?
To measure the power consumption of our servo motor we measured the voltage across it and the current passing through it and we multiply them as the formula
to calculate the power and expressed in Watts as shown below:
Power Consumption (Watts) = Voltage (Volts) x Current (Amps)
1. Voltage measurement
To measure the voltage we used a Multimeter that is calbrated in suitable range of voltages and the measured value is recorded some.
Note that when measuring the voltage, the measuring device(multimeter) is in parallel with the device(servo motor) to be measured.
1. Current measurement
The next is to measure the current where the multimeter is calbrated into current range as well as to change the positive probe of multimeter to the current port.
Note that when measuring the current, a multimeter is placed in series with the servo motor.
When the measured values(both current and voltage) are ready, the following formule is used to determine the power consumption of our servo motor.
Power Consumption (Watts) = Voltage (Volts) x Current (Amps)
The following are the measured values of both voltage and current
1. Voltage= 4.88V
2. Current= 0.044A
Then the power consumption= (4.88*0.044)W = 0.21472W = 214.72mW
