Week 18 – Invention, IP, and Income

Weekly Summary

We are at the home stretch of the FabAcademy 2021, most updates are on the Final Presentation Page. The assignment for this week was to think about a dissemination plan, and about a potential licensing model for the Final Project.

Dissemination Plan

Target Audience

The target audience are people engage is small-scale biological experiments, who want to conduct and monitor their experiments in a home setting.

Project Goal

The goal of the project is to make incubators for the Home Bio Lab affordable, reliable and useable.

Licensing Model

What parts of the project can be licensed?

GOSH (Gathering for Open Science Hardware) is a community that wants to make open science hardware ubiquitous by 2025. Their manifesto declares to: _ be accessible, makes science better, ethical, changes the culture of science, democratizes science, has no high priests, empowers people, has no black boxes, is impactful tools, allows multiple futures for science.

The Global Community Bio Summit is a good fit to the goal of GOSH, emphasing more the transformative social power of emerging biotechnologies. As a member (and fellow) of the BioSummit we came up with a Shared Purpose:

Fundamentally transform life sciences & democratize biotechnology to inspire creativity and improve lives by organizing life science change-makers and bioenthusiasts to build an inclusive global network, cultivate an accessible commons of knowledge and resources, launch community labs and projects, and enable local educators.

Illustrated Shared Purpose of the Global Community Bio

What does this have to do with licensing?

The goal of both of these communities is to make access to tool open, transparent and affordable.

One license that fits that model is the CERN Open Hardware Licence.

Business Plan & Funding

As the source, print and construction files are freely available, anyone with the knowledge and access to tools and machinery can construct their own Incubator Modules.

As the Incubator Modules use the network-enabled ESP32 the collection, management and visualization of the incubator data can become a service. Access to this service can be free for the first tier, the more computation/hosting resources are needed the tier can adjust.

Incubators are tools for experiments. What kind of experiments are possible? Provide and these experiments.

Sell Ready-Made Incubators

Pre-made modules, available at the Science Section in Tokyu Hands.
