18. Wildcard

Wildcard week is not easy for me at all! It’s a very open assignment that you have to pick one idea and make it in a limited time. For me, I have difficulty in choosing one idea, especially we have different topics that we can go through, and I am very excited to experience all this in a limited time!

Our assignment for this week is

Many Ideas…

From to make furniture piece,

First Idea _ Table With Epoxy Resin

Make my design then Mill and cut it with CNC router then add colored epoxy.

But I think this doesn’t fit with the assignment requirement.

Second Idea _ Origami

Then I thought about Folding, I wanted to try flexible material with laser cutting from the first week.

  • Kurina Sohn project, Fab Academy 2017, inspire me to try something like that…

  • Paper makes amazing things. Juney Lee one of the amazing examples of architecture origami shapes!

After searching in folding related with architecture, I thought about this famous pavilion.

So Kamel advice me to use Crystal paper or Bristol paper, We don’t have this material in our lab, so he recommend Origami World academy but also they haven’t this material right now.

So We decided to use Laser Printing Transparency, Stencil Sheet this material is available here. We have two types… Thermal and non Thermal.

Also we can use Canson sheet with 150 g and 280 g.

Then, I back to think again in different ideas from the kinetic pavilion, folding with a simulation of insects

Third Idea _ Butterfly

Fourth Idea _ Interactive Pavilion

The idea if this pavilion will be lower and when someone is close to the pavilion and directed to it, the pavilion will interact and its height will be changed… Also, it will depend on the number of people inside the space.

I want to make this idea but I don’t know what is the exact electronics compound can make this function.

Fifth Idea _ Simulation of Insects

I love Festo product so much. I didn’t get bored if I repeat their videos many times!!

Butterfly

Then I back to the third idea to make a flexible copper butterfly with LED and move its wings.

This is a simple sketch for the circuit design.

I took a Neil’s Board, LED array from the output devices lecture, as a reference to me.

I reached half of the butterfly, then the main point of this assignment, that we have to make something new couldn’t fit in any other assignment… If I continue in this idea, it means I didn’t fit the require assignment yet!

So, I decided to stop for this stage…

SOFTLab

I am a super fan of SOFTLab!! I love their creative work so much. Every new project and every concept is more talented. Every time they inspire me.

Melissa – We are Flowers Project, one of their projects. I wished if I was one of their team… I know this project from four years ago, and I want to do one project like that.

When I showed Kamel this project, he encouraged me to start this idea. I was confused with a lot of ideas and this one of them.

So, I opened Grasshopper and started to trail some shapes. I think to make a pavilion in the maker space in our FabLab, I think it would be nice. We have a large area with green area. So the multi-colors with sunlight in the environmental space would be n!ce…

I decided to make it easier. I will only design one unit with recurring units.

So, I started to search about the material, I made a lot of efforts, walked a lot of hours and visited a new placed for the first time in my life to get the closest material.

I know it’s a weird document, but if you are from Egypt and need any paper or plastic material, this contact will be useful for you!

Test Material

Then Kamel teaches me to test the material with laser cutting. We started with speed 300 and power 30 for cutting border and used also cut not scan “we need to cut with low power not engrave the inner shape”, this layer with speed 350 and power 20

This is the result

I used a different pattern that I have been drawn before, used different power and speed to reach the default with our machine.

After this result, I tried another pattern I have been made in Maker Diploma

After my discussion with Kamel, and select the idea that I will make. Also, we tested different materials from paper and stencil. Also, I made my design parametric.

Now I want to make a little test of the size of this unit to prepare my designs before I went to the maker space.

So, I made a small manual model at my home with a different scale and length of the base unit. Also, I want to test the fixation joint, if I will use a transparent plastic wire or another part.

This video will answer in these all questions…

This is the fixation joint in my pavilion.

For this stage, we reached to the regional review… After the discussion, I realized that with this idea too, I didn’t fit the assignment requirement!

Fortunately, I still have access to my website after Fab15.

There were a lot of interesting workshops in Fab15, I was so excited. I learned a lot from these amazing topics and made some projects in the workshops just in two hours!! while I took a week in one assignment to learn something new!

One of these workshops is

Manufacturing of Soft Robotics Presentation in Fab15

I searched a lot before about soft robotics, but I didn’t reach to the know-how…

I learned a lot here in these two hours and made my own folding bracelet.

Thanks to Monserrat Ciges and Adriana Cabrera so much, for this amazing presentation.

Manufacturing of Soft Robotics Presentation

  • I don’t have my PC that day, and the time in the workshop is limited, So I decided to draw my geometry manual.
  • I want to make a folding bracelet, so I chose this Zigzag pattern to make this idea…

  • I need two of the zigzag pattern . So I split the booth to be easy in cutting.

  • We used this kind of paper, butter paper or parchment paper between two layers of the thermal vinyl to split between them.

  • I paste the first part after cutting in the second part, to have the same pieces.

  • Now I have the two pieces of the zigzag pattern.
  • Also two pieces of the bracelet from a thermal vinyl material.

  • Heat Press Machine is very easy to use. We just set the heat value and put the object. Close the door. When your object is ready, the machine will make an alarm.

  • Then we split the top layer of the vinyl.
  • Now our bracelet is ready.

  • We used a small tube, and put it in the hole of our bracelet, to fill the air inside.
