week 1
- principles and practices, project management (Jan 29)
- Assignment: Project proposal and something about me
The first class held for this 2014 semester, has been focused on locating our new experience in the context moment of the Digital Fabrication short history.
I found very interesting, above all, the theme that, in order to make the Revolution this technology aims, the issue of the "material". Programmable materials, to be used in 3D Printing in the future, may change the role of these machines forever (from building tools to assembling tools) and give a new strenght in the battle for reducing waste.
Going ahead, the second subject concerned a view of all the applications usefull to create a net among us, to share and monitor all the contents we will realize this year. A necessary way of working with lot of people, keeping everyone always updated and part of the processes. Is is to build and update a personal web site which will let us (and our contents and projects) being always in a shared and partecipative communications with the classmates..
My proposal for the final assignment is a new approach bin for waste.
It is a multi material container for public spaces, which allows an easier interpretation of what to do and what material insert and where.
Usually different colored bins lay on the same level forcing people to go around the bins, read the information and in most of the cases mistake.
My bin is easy to see but also very charming. It has a vertical development so to have everything ready to use. The verticality also underlines the differences of the materials as the dedicated holes stay at different heights.
I already have a 3d version of it but now I want to build it within the digital fabrication contest also because it can be a different way for attracting the market.
As the object is targeted for public spaces, maybe also outdoor, it need to be very resistant.
From this very beginning consideration, should start a search for the right material, also in relation with the process of making the Fab Lab can offer.
I’ll may go for an aluminum 2mm for the back shell and 3d printed plastic for the single containers in it.
About me,
I came to digital fabrication from different sectors, such as waste managment, sailing, etc.
Since a while I’ve started graphical 3D modeling and I wish be able to realize my own ideas which is my personal objective with this course.
All of my experiences share the will to learn how to live better in synergy with the environment.
Life at sea teached me in particular how important is the continuos search for the best efficiency. Exactly what Nature always does. No loss.
This is the way I view Digital fabrication in my future.
