Machine Design

This is a grupal assignment, we used the previus investigation to assembly a machine that use the XY core as basis.

Particulary I was working with Toshiro the mechanical part and the structure of the machine. We bought all components and assembly it. The other part of the group were making the software and programation of machine, we work also toguether buth each group had a main responsability of the machine.

For the mechanism and structure of the machine we were using Solid Works as software for designing and building the 3d model, this were made by Toshiro Tabuchi he can operate well this software and is better that the model should be done only by one person. But the design we all contribute with different parts of the machine. I will describe some parts of the fabrication part.

It start with a cutting board. Its cheaper to use a cutting board used normally for cooking. This is a quite difficult to mill because we didn't had the correct mill and our mill with 3 flutes burn the plastic. This plastic makes imposible the cut, we had to remove the plastic for each 10 centimeter of cut. Only then we realized that we were wrong choosing this material.

After this milling process we had all parts of the machine. This were taken of old machines. We recycled the motors and the components, even the bushings and shafts were taked from a machine.

We have here, the gears, motors, bushings, belts, shafts, screws and machined parts, and laser cutted parts.

All non fabricated components were recycled from old machines. In our context we don't have a stepper motor store, so we took this motors from a printer and we adapted the belts of another printer with the same step.

The shafts came from a printer too and it came with the bushings, that was a plus for us but we know that if we want to build our machine we have to fabricate this parts. This is only a exploration of cnc machine.

This are photos of the assembly process:

This shows the movemente before turning the machine on with the arduino.

This machine works with an arduino and two motor controllers. The next video shows this home-made arduino working. The machine will move the spindle. It works!

Conclusions of the Machine Design

After this machine design we know that we have a lot of possibilities for making a 3d printer, a food printer, a milling machine and a lot of possible applications that would be better explained in the next assignment.

This machine is the start of a big project, we developed our first 2d cnc prototype that means that we could make this fabrication better. The idea is to develope the same but using replicable components and also to find a real aplication. Maybe the best option is to make a milling machine because is the easyest cnc.

Another very important point is that we could use this "experiment" to move a surface because the motors that we found in the market are enough strong for moving a surface with a fixed Z axis. Unfortunatly we couldn't finish this part for problems with the availability of this machine.
