Open Source Beehives

Kenyan Top Bar Beehive

I adapted an open source Kenyan Top-bar beehive design that I found in the Sketchup Marketplace. It was only actually created a couple of days before my final presentation but I wanted to show it on the video lecture and we had been having issues with the shopbot so I decided to laser cut it.

I wouldn't use this particular material for a beehive anyway so essentially it was just to be a prototype. Now that I have made a physical version I want to adapt some of the features of the hive before installing it in Barcelona.

Warré Hive

Together with Jon Minchin and Ferran Masip, a beehive project collaboration was born. We were working with a place called OKNO in Brussels and we had a bee-expert called Annemie advising us over email how we should proceed with our design in order to ensure the wellbeing of the bees.

The engraved pattern that you can see on the outside of the hive is the OpenStructures grid. The entire hive design adheres to this grid.
