3D Scanning And Printing

Introduction

3D Scanning

3D scanner is a tool collects data of an object (the shape) or the colour. it is used for industrial or civil engineering or even medical and many things

3D scanning advantages

  • ُُEasy to collect complex body data
  • collect object data without touching it
  • limitations

  • 3D scanner cannot detect clear data about an object due to the environment around the object. I've tried to scan a yellow colored object while the background area has light colors but the shape was not clear

  • 3D Printing

3D printer is a tool used to make a 3 D object by cumulative construction. To print an object using 3D printer you need to design an object using 3D design softwares such as Autodesk fusion 360.

  • High precision and high quality of models.
  • 3D printer has ability to print complex, large sized parts and overlapping parts.

  • limitations

  • Long time printing
  • Slow printing process that takes hours or days depending on the size of the object.

  • 3D scanning and printing assignment

    3D scanning

For 3D scan I used sense Scanner which is available in our fablab.

First of all you should select that if you want to scan a person or an object

You need to specify the size of the object to be scanned, small (16"), medium (40") or large (80")

take your time while scanning. do not hurry

I think tge scan is not that quality but it is ok. this shape is one of traditional buildings

Save the file >> open browser>>sketchfab.com>> signup and upload the file

    3D Printing

In UAE fablab we have ultimaker 2+ and 3 extended printers. The most popular filament materials for 3D printing are PLA (Polylactic Acid) and ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene). The feeder pulls the filament toward the hot end which melt the material and start building the object layer by layer. The quality of the printed object increase and decrease depends on the layer heights and the infill but when you decrease layer height the model take long time to be printed. To print an object you must save your design as STL file

    Cura software

To print an object, You should open the STL file in Cura software and choose the printer model+ set all the settings, Layer heights, shel settings ( thikness of the top and bottom + wall), The infill Density, Printing speed and the most important is the support for similar of the following object. The red colored area need support otherwise the print will be wasted

Then you click on Prepare and you can find the time for the print to be completed + the filament Capacity sos do not forget that you have enough filament on the printer for your design. Save your file in USB or SD card as per the printer required start printing

I used to print this part of my final Project. I used to print three pieces of this design because the thread was not fit on the BCD. the I learn to print only the thread for testing to avoid wasting time and materials
