11. Applications and implications

Introduction

This week, our assignment was to think deeply about our final project and how we wanted it to turn out. In order to do this, we were given some questions to think about, such as what does the project does, what materials it will use, how much it will cost, etc.

My Project

As seen on my final project page or my week 1 page, I want to create a real-life twitch drone, from the game Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Seige, using the skills that I will obtain through each of the weekly assignments.

What will it do?

My final project will be the twitch drone, which is a remotely controlled, 2 wheel drone that will provide live camera footage to the user. I hope to be able to have all of the control and viewing accessible from a phone, and will try to use bluetooth in order to connect the phone to the drone.

Who’s done it beforehand?

A couple of people have done it beforehand, but they have used scraped parts from other materials such as an RC Car, so I believe that what I am doing is unique and will be the first drone to be made from “scratch”

What will you design?

I will design the board(s) that will control the drone’s functions, the casing that will contain all of my components, and the wheels that will be used (casting and molding).

What materials and components will be used?

The Body- I believe that I will use a 3D print for the body of my drone as it is the best way I can get the shape I want the body to be in. Wheels- I will try to cast and mold wheels for the drone, and try to make it a somewhat rubbery surface. Internals- I will try to use an ATTiny 412 in order to run this project, but will try to create a very optimized board in order to try to run all of the functions off of.

Where will it come from?

My parts will come from a variety of sources including adafruit, amazon, and Arduino.

How much will they cost?

Component # of Parts Cost
DC Motor 2 ~$30
Electronic Speed Controller 2 ~$15
Power Supply (18650 Battery) 5 ~$5
Single-Sided FR-1 4 $4

Estimated Total: $130 *Will be updated during the building process (if necessary)

What parts and systems will be made?

I will create the main body, the wheels, and the board for my drone.

What processes will be used?

Computer-Aided Design will be used in order to have a general design overview of my project, as well as the design for the main body of my drone. Electronics Design and Production will be necessary for me in order to create my boards. I will use molding and casting for my wheels.

What questions need to be answered?

The question that needs to be answered is how will I be able to develop an app or a program that can run both the live feed and have controls on it, and if that is not possible, what would be the alternate plan, as this step has the biggest influence on my project, and will change the course of it if depending on my choice.

How will it be evaluated?

My project will be evaluated based on whether the user can properly control the drone and can see the live feed from the camera.

Need to include

Additive and subtractive fabrication processes Electronics Design and Production Embedded microcontroller interfacing and programming Systems integration and packing

Where can I make rather than buy?

I believe 90% of my project will be made by me, and the parts that I may need to buy is a board for wireless connections, if necessary.
