About me

Hi! My name is Elaine Liu and I am now a freshman at MIT; although I was a sophomore at Charlotte Latin School when this was first authored.

I love engineering and computer science, and FabAcademy is one of the greatest opportunities for me to learn so much and explore my passions. I am so excited to experience this course.

My Background

I was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but I moved down to Charlotte, North Carolina, when I was a little kid. I love it here in Charlotte, but I do miss the snow sometimes.

My STEM Roots

I’m relatively new to engineering, but I’ve always loved STEM. From doing hours of math when I was little to encountering Python in the middle of ninth grade, I’ve always loved STEM. Engineering was next. My first time in the lab was at the beginning of my sophomore year in 2019 for a class, where I learned about using multiple machines and a variety of softwares. In this class, I learned that I loved making and designing simplistic yet useful things (you can check my high school digital portfolio here). I loved being able to make anything I wanted to. I am extremely fortunate to have access to a FabLab and Fab Academy, and I can’t wait to make more. When I grow older, I aspire to join the STEM field in a way that helps my community grow.

Outside of STEM

Aside from engineering and programming, I love running, art, and debate! I run whenever I need to clear my mind. I’ve been painting and sketching for eight years now, and whenever I need a creative boost I always end up in front of a sketchbook. I love, love debating and keeping up with current events; I think it’s very important that we understand what is happening in our world so that we can work to improve it. I also love volunteering and helping my community. I co-founded the non-profit organization Aid First Inc to give back to this state I love.
