applications and implications
- Assignment
plan and document a final project that integrates the range of units covered:
what will it do?
who's done what beforehand?
what materials and components will be required?
where will they come from?
how much will it cost?
what parts and systems will be made?
what processes will be used?
what tasks need to be completed?
what questions need to be answered?
what is the schedule?
how will it be evaluated?
projects can be separate or joint, but need to show individual mastery of all of the skills
where possible, you should make rather than buy the parts of your project
Progress
- What I want to do is to automate 3D stockinette stitch.
3D stockinette stitch is a stitch I invented.
back side of usual stockinette stitch
Here is the image of the back side of usual stockinette stitch. When you knit another part of the thread through the red parts, it will be 3D stokinette stitch.
Knitted another part of the thread (Using another thread just for explanation)

- Here is the image for the final machine. (I pasted this image on computer-aided design week also.)
A horizontal needle gives a stitch to a vertical needle.
I bought an old knitting machine for 1 yen (==1 cent) on Yahoo! auction. The reason I bought it is to get latch needles. (Usually, 10 latch needles cost about 600yen. The knitting machine has 200 latch needles!)

The Assignment
-
what will it do?
it knits three dimensionally.
who's done what beforehand?
no one.

what materials and components will be required?
latch needles
acrylic
lead screws
round bars (stainless steel or steel)
couplings
nuts
MDF
stepper motors
servo motors
electronic parts
where will they come from?
latch needles: internet
acrylic: DIY center
lead screws: DIY center, its edge will be lathed at FabLab for connecting with a stepper
round bars (stainless steel or steel): DIY center
couplings: DIY center
nuts: DIY center
MDF: DIY center
stepper motors: Akizuki Denshi
servo motors: Sengoku Densho
electronic parts: FabLab
how much will it cost?
latch needles: 2000 JPY approx. (a used knitting machine + postage)
acrylic: 500 JPY approx.
lead screws: 500 JPY approx.
round bars (stainless steel or steel): 500 JPY approx.
nuts: 500 JPY approx.
MDF: 500 JPY approx.
stepper motors: 2000 JPY
servo mortors: 1600 JPY
electronic parts: 2000 JPY approx.
what parts and systems will be made?
lead screw with latched edge to be connected with steppers
mechanics that servo motors push and pull latch needles
what processes will be used?
lasercutting
PCB milling
assembling
what tasks need to be completed?
mechanical design
PCB design
lathe lead screws
assembling
coding
what questions need to be answered?
clock frequency to make steppers and servos work
(hello.servo board runs at 20MHz, hello.stepper board runs at 8Mhz)
what is the schedule?
-May 15 get latch needles, mechanical design, PCB design
-May 22 fabrication
-May 29 debugging
how will it be evaluated?
1. The machine works.
2. The machine knits.
