Computer-Controlled Machining
Februari 23th, 2011
This weeks assignment was a bit hectic. Frosti is very busy working on a project with the local fishermen so we actually had to do most of this in the weekend. This resulted in a few mistakes because of the very short time we had to work on this.
The FabLab Shelve
Frosti and I chose to combine our forces and create something we could use in the FabLab. The idea was that, although the FabLab on Vestmannaeyjar looks nice, it should look a bit more inviting to new people.
Instead of going with a sleek, modern design, we went with something local that looks cool: the eruption of the vulcano "Eldfell" (1973).
We have recently moved some of the furniture at the FabLab and this has given us a lot more space to work with. Because of this we figured it might be nice to make a shelve that people can use to show off their projects. We devided the work to make the most of our short time so Frosti has designed that background and bottom of the board while I designed the sides.
References
I used the left image of the Eldfell eruption as a reference for the sides while Frosti used the right picture to make the background.
I sketched a couple of designs on paper before I made them in Adobe Illustrator. This allowed me and Frosti to agree on the design without wasting too much time in Illustrator / Inkscape.
The result
Although I made some stupid mistakes while making this, I still think it looks cool. While designing the shelve, I forgot to take the size of the drill into account. This resulted in some of the parts not fitting. (I blame this on working in the weekend, apparantly my brain shuts off on those days) I also forgot to make connectors between the bottom and back of the shelve. I actually had them in an old design but forgot to add them to the new one.
Frosti wanted to texture the flames on the background using the drill. Although the effect looks nice, it took forever! I'll definitely keep that in mind next time and bring some movies with me.
We want this shelve to look really cool and show the visitors that you can get really creative here and build (almost) everything you want. This is why we are going to remake this shelve with different wood and colour it using spraypaint. The idea is that the shelve will look as much as possible like the original pictures.
