This week I worked on sand machine with Alisa from idea to a real machine!

Project Process

  1. Prototyping
  2. Structure and Design
  3. Make and Assemble
  4. Code and Software

Individual Contribution

Because there are only two of us to finish the project, we do most of the work together. I do the following things: - design holding parts - assembling the machine

Prototyping

We brainstormed a lot ideas about this week’s assignment. And we decide to build something which can draw on sand.

We explore some structures to apply on own idea.

Structure design

  1. Laser Cut: Parts
  2. Actuator 3D Printer
  3. Holder
  4. Magnet:adjustable height
  5. Steal Ball

Make and Assemble

Code and Software

  1. grbl framework on arduino uno electronic board
  2. drawing with illustrator and rhino
  3. easel.inventables.com to convert design to gcode
  4. use gcode universal sender to control the machine

Problems

  1. One problem of this machine is that the magnetic head is too big compared to the steal ball, which makes the movement not so stable. To solve this problem, we tried different speed and find a suitable speed for this design.

Future Development

  1. For this machine, we should build a shield to hold the sand.
  2. All the electronic board and wires should be well placed and organized.
