8. Computer Controlled Machining

Objectives

  • Make (design+mill+assemble) something big (~meter-scale).

Group Assignment Group Assignment page

  • Test run-out, alignment, speeds, feeds, and tool paths for your machine.

The Eighth week’s class of my fab academy life took place and the professor Neil class started as usual, this week assignmend as khown as Computer controlled machining

.

CNC router

A computer numerical control (CNC) router is a computer-controlled cutting machine that uses a endmill on a spindle to cut a variety of materials, including wood, composites, aluminium, steel, plastics, glass, and foams by moving in diffrent axis. Many carpentry shop machines, such as the panel saw, spindle moulder, and boring machine, can be replaced by CNC routers.

ShopBot PRSalpha 96

We use Shopbot PRSalpha 96 in our lab, which has Fast, closed-loop Vexta alphaStep motors on all three axes (two on the X-axis) — The alphaStep system keeps track of motor shafts locations and PC inputs in order to provide more precise and error-free cutting. It can cut at up to 600 inches per minute (depending on the cutting tool and material) and travel at 1,800 inches per minute. as well as a spindle speed of 15000 rpm. It is a good choice for furniture, sign, and cabinet manufacture because of these properties. On the other hand, this makes the machine a little risky, necessitating safety training before operating it.

Safty Trainning

Because of the machine’s noise and the possibility of being wounded by thrown-off chips or broken bits always wear suitable ear protection and safe eyewear when working on a CNC machine.

When handling the workpiece, use gloves to avoid getting shards in your hands, and wear appropriate footwear, such as safety boots, at all times.

always use a mask since the file dust can be injurious to your health. During machining processes, keep your hands away from any moving parts. When the machine is on, keep a safe distance from it. Avoid touching the cutting edges of tools when handling or passing them. When you’re done using the machine, make sure to switch it off fully and clean it. make sure the spindle is firmly tightened in the chuck before starting the machine. Never wear jewelry or lose clothing, and if possible, wear half sleeves. Never leave the machine running, and in the event of an emergency, press the emergency stop button.

Test cut

We built a comp to determine the greatest fit and cut the file out on 20mm plywood for a group assigment, but the results were poor owing to the ply’s ageing. We tested on 20 mm ply and the it had a tight fit on the 19.9mm gap.

In this week assignment is Computer controlled machine in known as Make (design+mill+assemble) something big (~meter-scale) this is the assignment

In our Fablabs’s machine is SHOPBOT PRSalpha 96 CNC Router

Price detais about shopbot click here

I studied about function and working of the shopbot In any emergency situation This is the emaregency switch,This is main impoartent one

Then after that I started for designing about by assignmend work

So I planed to make a Ironing table

Then I started 3D designing for fusion360

video Here.mp4

Then after designing arrange the design in a plain sheet the size of sheet is 8*4feet

Then next I convert the Body in component after that select the full component

After that I Arrange the full component in that plain boad

In Take modify tool then select arrange tool select the full component, then select the plain and click the ok button

After that export the DXF file then open the shopbot software

After designing the model, I made a miniature with cardboard using laser cutter.

Bit changing

Remove and take the key attached to the collet wrench. Lose the locknut using a collet wrench and spanner. Collect bit, collet, and locknut in hand. clean collet and locknut. Press collet into locknut and place the bit inside. Insert these into the spindle and tighten the locknut. Support bit with finger.

open the shopbot software

Open V-Carve pro, go to File → Open→ and select the Dxf file of our design. Go to Edit→ Job size, Then set dimensions of the material. and set origin point.

Add bit

In the opening small window, we can edit properties(select tool, toolpath direction, tab etc,…) I used 6mm 2 flute bit for all operations. After setting all, click on the calculate button. *After creating different tool paths select some toolpaths and click on save button.

Then next switch on the shopbot set cnc in orgin position Click on Zero axes button, and tick on X-axis, Y-axis, Z-axis and click on ZERO butto Close the Jogging panel and click on CUT PATH button Select the G-code file for cutting. The shopbot will finshed the drilling work

After that I screwed the playwood using driller

Then after screwing add start to the cutting process

Click the ok button

cutting on going

After cutting I asambled the table
