18. Invention, Intellectual property and Income

For this week, I have learnt on:

A Dissemination Plan which means how will you raise awareness of my final project, AquaPonics Pilot System (APPS) amongst the target group.

For this week, I have worked on my Dissemination Plan as follows:

1. Who is my project for?

This project is mainly for:

  • Students can learn the ecosystem, cultivate their own herbs and fishes from my APPS into order to make their own APPS in group that can collaborate and exchange with each others.

  • Teachers can use my APPS as a teaching tool that can be along with tailored ecosystem and STEM curriculum.

  • Local and overseas educators can have academic and pedagogy exchange by using my APPS as a starting point of sharing teaching experience. Teachers can bring their students from different schools and countries sharing with the knowledge learning exposure.

2. How is it funded?

The iSpace in our school is set up this year. Therefore, my final project, APPS, is supported by my School-Based Research Fund to promote STEM Development in Whole-School Approach for all students, teachers, local and overseas educator.

3. Is there a business plan?

  • Background - The concepts of using a teaching tool for curriculum development in STEM education

  • Purposes - Exchange & Sharing Platform for Education Field

  • Promotion - Special intra-school events in and annual inter-school study carnival

  • Benefits - Upgrading the students’, teachers’ and educators’ STEM cutting-edge knowledge, skills and techniques

  • Duration - 2 years

  • Expected Outcome - To arouse the students’, teachers’and educators’ interest on joining the development on STEM education

  • Future Impact - More and more new cutting-edge technological invention

4. How would you fund scaling up?

In Hong Kong, there are many subsidies to promote any education area included STEM education as follows:

I can use this fund to design our own curriculum of each parts in my APPS. Then, I can invite the students and teachers in other schools to join with our school to form a network as learning and teaching platform. Different similar devices can be designed in each school and shared in annual study carnival to stimulate each student’s creativity, collaborative skills and competence in solving problems with innovative thinking.

This programme is successfully applied for our school recently in order to promote STEM education to nuture our students’ IT talents. We can use the fund from this programme to organise more relevant extra-curricular curriculum and activities to deepen students’ cutting-edge IT knowledge for Artificial intelligence, Blockchain, Cloud computing and big Data analytics Education in the Future Goal.

5. What are the outlined future possibilities?

Teaching Platform and forum can be created and leaded for Aquaponics Education in Hong Kong.

6. How to make them probabilities?

Interschool project sharing events and annual study carnivals for students and teachers can be organised to exchange their own projects with local and overseas schools.

7. Is there a license I chose or something else to protect intellectual properties of my project?

Intellectual property is important to our daily lives. Hong Kong is a Creative Place. Protection of intellectual property rights protects creativity and hardworking from writers, artists, designers, software programmers, inventors and so on.

When you need to use a process, concepts, tools or anything that is protected by a patent, copyright or trademark, the following steps should be noted to license Intellectual property.

Step 1 Do your research

I have gone through some websites about Licensing in Intellectual property in some places which have closely business relationship as follows (In alphabetical order):

Step 2 Draft the license

Any issue about Intellectual Property in Hong Kong is managed by Intellectual Property Department.

Their statements are as follows:

  • To maintain the protection of intellectual property rights to the highest international standards, so that Hong Kong, China remains a place where creativity and talent can flourish.

  • To provide high-quality and responsive patent, trademark and designs registration services to the public in Hong Kong, China.

  • To promote awareness of intellectual property rights of the individual, and a respect for the rights of others.

In Hong Kong, Intellectual property is the name commonly given to a group of separate intangible property rights. These include:
- Trademarks - Patents
- Copyright
- Designs
- Plant varieties - Layout design of integrated circuits

If I need to license my final product, a Registered Design and Patent can be applied for protection of my intellectual property.

  • Registered designs: Protection of my product on the appearance only

  • Patent: Protection of my product relating to the design works.

Step 3 Monitor the license

  • I will get the certificate for the patent and design registration. I should make sure the patent number and my APPS product which is clearly displayed on my website to show the patent number.

  • After registry of the design of my APPS and patent in Hong Kong, the information of my design registration will be published by Hong Kong intellectual Property Journal. I can search the related information from the online search system which is provided by the Intellectual Property Department

  • Renewal the patent and design registration should be made before the due date to protect my rights of invention.

  • I should consult and seek the professional advice from the agents’ or solicitors’ firms which is specialised in intellectual property to protect and defend my rights if I see my design being used without my permission.

The development of the plan of dissemination

As I have mentioned in the topic of Applications and Implications (Week 17) last week, through this APPS learning platform, I would like to meet the following goals in different aspects:

  1. Students can learn the ecosystem from this APPS;
  2. Students can cultivate their own herbs and fishes by using their unique APPS;
  3. Students can learn how to make their own APPS;
  4. Students can collaborate to complete a group APPS project;
  5. Teachers can use this APPS for teaching tools;
  6. Teachers can design a tailored curriculum according this APPS;
  7. Teacher can be enlightened by this APPS to design other teaching tools for the students;
  8. Students and Teachers in different schools in different countries can use this APPS as a starting point for academic exchange.

Therefore, I will share my ideas of this APPS device to as many students and teachers as I can. I am also welcome to share any file and programming code. However The plan of dissemination is necessary and important because the others are protected to use my project freely. This is because I have responsibilities to protect all stakeholders who supported our creation in school. However, the profit of this creation is not our consideration because I have worked in the non-profit. Therefore, appropriate credit should be given and indicated whether any change has been made. If I have to choose a license that must use this same license for convenient administration purpose and no commercial purpose should be mentioned.

After the lecture of this week, I have know about Creative Commons. This information has been attracted me a lot because helping people building a vibrant, collaborative global commons are their aims and we are free to share and adapt under attribution, non-commercial, shareAlike under the same license.

After consideration, my Final project, AquaPonics Pilot System (APPS), will be under Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).

A draft summary slide was prepared as follows:

  • The theme for the slide is **Nature vs Technology”

  • Since the mobile interface is used for controlling the work of all electronics components, I have put a photo of mobile phone at the centre of the slide to highlight one of the special characheristics of my APPS.

  • The photos for all the processes which I have learnt from Fab Academy in 2021 should be put onto the slide as follows:

A draft video slide, which is 1-minute video, was prepared as follows:
