1. Final Project

This week I worked on defining my final project idea and started to getting used to the documentation process.

Inspiration

Recently over quarantine, I have taken an interest in chess, so I thought it would be an interesting concept to implement engineering and programming into the game. Instantly, I was reminded of the scene in the first Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, when Ron and Harry are playing Wizard’s Chess. In short, a player would have a command and the piece would move itself. Additionally, if a player took the oponents piece, their piece would automatically move outside of the board.

Project & Plan

My idea for the final project is to have two axes controlled by two stepper motors, similar to a cnc machine or laser cutter, moving an electromagnetic. The magnet will move to the location of the chess piece, turn on, and move it to its destination.

I am not sure yet on user input for the project using voice commands, like Harry and Ron use in Wizards’ Chess, an IOS App, or buttons. Currently, I am taking AP Computer Science, which focuses on Swift with IOS mobile app development, so building a simple app for the project would be an interesting application.

Here is the project I designed using Fusion 360 as a three dimensional reference when cretaing my project:
