Week 19 - Invention, Intellectual Property, And Income
- assignment
- develop a plan for dissemination of your final project
- prepare drafts of your summary slide (presentation.png, 1920x1080) and video clip (presentation.mp4, 1080p HTML5, < ~minute, < ~25 MB) and put them in your root directory
1. Final Project Dissemination Plan
For my final project — the Smart Glasses Kit that adds AI-powered voice interaction and vision processing capabilities to regular glasses — I plan the following dissemination strategy:
Target Users
- Makers, students, and educators interested in wearable AI.
- Visually impaired users (with future accessibility-focused adaptations).
- Open-source hardware developers.
Distribution Channels
- GitHub Repository: I will publish all source code, PCB design files, and documentation under an open-source license (likely MIT or CERN-OHL).
- Hackster.io Project Page: To engage the maker community and share project updates.
- YouTube: A short demo video to showcase functionality and use cases.
- FabAcademy Archive: Slide and video submitted as part of my official project page.
- Social Media & Forums: Posts in platforms like Twitter, Reddit (r/esp32, r/DIY), and Seeed Studio community.
2. Intellectual Property Considerations
- I do not plan to patent this project.
- Instead, I favor open innovation and sharing, to encourage collaboration.
- The components used (ESP32-S3, camera modules, etc.) are open and accessible.
- Any machine learning model used will be based on open-source alternatives (e.g., Whisper, TFLite).
For my final project, I have carefully considered the intellectual property (IP) aspects of both hardware and software components. My approach favors open-source principles to encourage community collaboration and further innovation.
License Choice: MIT License
- I use the XIAO-ZHI.AI software stack in my project, which is released under the MIT License.
- To maintain compatibility and support open-source values, I have chosen to release my own software under the MIT License as well.

3. Potential Sources of Income
While I do not aim to commercialize this project immediately, potential income paths include:
- Selling kits or pre-assembled units via marketplaces like Tindie or Seeed Fusion.
- Providing educational workshops and online tutorials.
- Seeking collaboration with accessibility-focused NGOs or startups.
