About me

Hello FabWorld! My name is Rico…and I am a repressed creator and compulsive maker.

Born in northern Thailand, emigrated to the U.S.A. at the age of 10, moved to Hong Kong in 2008 and relocated to Japan a little over a year ago.

I studied Art History and Architecture back in college and grad school, but now work for an Investment company (hence the repression). In my free time, I photograph, make videos, sketch, paint, carve, build…basically anything and everything that allows me to be creative and make something.

I have always been fascinated with technology…

and was one of the first few kids in the computer lab learning BASIC and PASCAL programming when the PC was in its infancy. More recently, I have been using ‘drones’ to photograph and make videos, assembled a 3D printer (Pruesa Mk3), learned to build quadcopters and studying up on ‘Machine Learning and Self-driving Vehicles’. I have a particular interest in robotics and have built and played around with several low-level robots…but hope to ramp up my expertise…with an eventual goal to open a maker space for kids.

I am also a HUGE SciFi fan…

Movies: Star Wars, 2001, Blade Runner, Contact, Matrix, Akira, Interstellar

Authors: Arthur C. Clarke, Phillip Dick, Frank Herbert, William Gibson, Neal Stephenson, and more recently Adrian Tchaikovsky and Martha Wells.

My love of SciFi has informed my imagination and aesthetic all my life…and also fixed the idea in my mind that an integral and positive relationship between people and technology can occur.

I am extremely excited about my FabAcademy journey…

and look forward to skilling up. I hope to get to know and learn from many of you over the next 6 months!
