COMPOSITES

This is my first time working with composites. The task for this week is to design something, make a mold and produce a fiber composite piece in it. I decided to do an ashtray.

1. Design the mold in Rhino

2. Making the mold in ShopBot The base material of the mold is a set of 3 glued wood boards (thickness=1.5 cm each one). I go to ShopBot PartWorks3D and I make the .sbo archives:

- Roughing Toolpath - Top.sbp
- Finishing Toolpath - Top.sbp
I need this archives to open them with ShopBot Console to mill the mold.

It is important to see the preview in PartWorks3D, there you can see the cuts and can understand how the diameter of the drill affects you final result.

Setting X,Y

You have to measure your star point in X and Y. Then You go to ShopBot Console and press K to go to the key pad. There you introduce the values of X and Y of your new 0,0 point. Then you go to Zero/zero[2] axesx(X&Y). Now you have your own 0,0 point setted.

Setting Z

To set Z you have to take the metal board thai is near the drill and put in in the ShopBot table. Before this is very important to check if the drill is ok. For this, take the metalic board with you hand and touch the drill.

ShopBot starts the work:

When the Roughing Toolpath is finished, I decided to change the drill to make a better finishing:

We go to PartWorks to make a round cutting square to cut the mold (9x9cm).

You can see here the mold:

Note: it is very impotant the security working with ShopBot:

Making pieces To make the ashtray I have used fiberglass, wax and epoxy resin.

You have to be carefull with the bubles, that is why I used a spatula:
