This week we learn about the additive fabrication and its supportive technologies 3D designing, already initiated in week 2 and 3D scanning. As a fabrication method 3D printing was invented in 1980`s by several peoples which discovered different principles for realizing the processs. Its main advantage is reducing the mangement of the complexity and thus the cost. This reduction can be understood two ways, complex shapes that cann’t be made otherwise are now available or shapes made of parts that require a lot of effort in assembling them can now be made in one go at the same time cost as a simple block piece.

There are different technologies developed able to print a variety of materials. The most accesible for low end manufacturing are printers based on fused deposition molding process (FDM) and stereolithography (SLA, called also resin printers). The quality and properties of the finished work depend on the technology, on the material, the settings of the machine and the algorithms of the softwares, all of these being actively developed.

For the assignments we had to investigate the limitations coming with the the printers we have availble, usually FDM or SLA printers.

Group assignment:

  • test the design rules for your 3D printer(s)

Individual assignment:

  • Design and 3D print an object (small, few cm3, limited by printer time) that could not be made subtractively
  • 3D scan an object (and optionally print it)
