3. Computer controlled cutting¶
A real interesting week , Finally getting around machines .
Laser Characterising¶
To Work on a machine , we need to get to know it first . As a group assignment , We ran tests on different materials to set our machine parameters .
Our machine is a 90 watt Morn 3050 with a working area of 30 cm * 50 cm
While designing , you concider the Kerf .
For cutting : Simply , You make sure the focus is set right .
Then you check the right power and speed for your material .
Kerf¶
The width of the laser point cutting through the material . It must be concidered while designing construction parts so they fit correctly .
Testing different Opennings , 2.7 mm Seemed to work best for the 3mm Acrylic .
Speed & Power of cutting¶
Vary from a material to another . Simply , I tested till I got the sweet point .
I set the power and speed and hit pulse while moving to see the effect
Tested a 280 gram Paper ” I’m an origamist , had to know ” To see what works . The results weren’t perfect , But I’m satisfied for a first try .
Focus¶
The distance from the lens to the surface of the material . Simple test of pulsing & Having a standard piece to quickly set it .

It was easy to set parameters and use them in my design .
Tried Changing a parameter and the design would edit successfuly .

Vinyl Cutting¶
Machine setup¶
Worked on Silhouette Cameo .
Very easy interface , you just load your sheet and get your file from a USB or sent directly from the software .
Amazing feature , you can set your blace force manually using a hole , or it is done automatically to the force you sat in the software .
Software¶
Very easy software . Cut my favourite logo of Batman .
First I opened the image in the software , I traced the outline using the tracing tool .
Then I set up the cutting settings : the pressure of the blade , 1 worked fine for the vinyl we had , And for the force & the speed I used the default numbers and they were good as well .
And after hitiing send , The machine starts and you get your logo cut out !
