2. Project Management

My final project is to construct VTOL(vertical takeoff and landing) drone.

Research

During my research of VTOLs I found out that most of them are designed to take off directly vertically, but for that it needs very powerful vertical motors, or needs at least several of them. For my project I will try to build VTOL that also will accelerate on the ground before takeoff, but this will be very short distance, but hopefully it will reduce the power and weight for the motors. After taking off the side motors will rotate to the side of flight to gain more lift. Previously I have little experience with making drones using foam, but for this project I would like to learn how to work with composites and create the wing and fuselage from composite materials.

Above is a first sketch of the project, it will be modified during the classes.

Molding

After having final design and calculations of the plane I need to prepare the molding process. I will use carbon fiber molding for the wings, and basalt fibercloth for the fuselage. The molds will be make out of mdf material with the use of CNC machine.

Materials

I will use brushiest motors, esc’s, lipo battery, servo motors, receiver and transmitter for manual control
