5. 3D scanning and printing

This week we worked on testing the design rules for our 3D printers.

Design rules

At Fab Lab Dilijan, we’re using two MakerBot Replicator 2 printers. The specification of the printers are as follows:

specs

In order to test the printer settings, Overhang and Bridge Test was downloaded from Thingiverse to be printed. Here is the result:

test

As can be seen, was not so successful in bridges and azimuthal angles between the layers.

If this object was printed to scale, it could be concluded that our printer is capable of printing 40° overhangs, but anything over that and it would need a support. Also, in printing the bridges it could be concluded that even a 1 inch bridge has leaks and cannot be printed without support.

However, since the object was not printed to scale, these conclusions cannot entirely be made.

Troubleshooting the 3D printers

Here is a very useful website in troubleshooting various problems that can arise in using 3D printers.
