1. Principles and Practices

  • Individual assignment: Plan and sketch a potential final project.

Final Project Inspiration

For my final project, I want to create something that not only interests me but something that will challenge me to use as many digital fabrication techniques as possible.

I can remember that since a young age I have had an immense appreciation of furniture design. Growing up I recall a chair that my grandfather had in his office that looked really cool and I would always want to sit in it.

It wouldn’t be til I was in high school that I would know that the chair I grew up loving was called an Eames Lounge Chair - designed by Charles and Ray Eames.

Final Project Idea

The thought of creating a piece of furniture in the fab lab has crossed my mind many times. Now that I have a reason to do so and a pretty big inspiration to back it, I have decided that now is the time.

The chair I will design and fabricate will have a luxurious spin. The chair itself will turn on by inserting a carbon fiber 3D printed card that will be embedded with a magnet that will interact with a hall effect sensor. From there I will have 3 push buttons installed in the armrest that when pushed will cycle through RGB codes and change RGB lights that are hidden in different areas of the chair.

I plan on using the following processes in the design and build out of this chair.

  • CNC Routing - Outer panels and fusion supports.
  • Water Jet Cutting - Hair pin style legs and geometric design inserts.
  • Laser Cutting - Laser cut fabric patterns for cushions.
  • 3D Printing - Chopped carbon reinforced nylon printed card.
  • Molding and Casting - Cushions.
  • Electronics - RGB led’s & hall effect sensor.
